In seven scenes in a design of two tiers, citizens dispute the oppressive fees imposed by a zealous tax collector who taxes bugs, pets, a bulbous nose and a runny nose, corns on a foot, and a man's skin. In the scene on the upper right, the tax collector penalizes a man whom he accuses of evading tax as he defecates in a bush

A haggard old woman carelessly mixing a recipe for corns on the fire in her sordid bedroom. As well as being cluttered with potions, the room contains an assortment of squabbling pets; on the wall hangs a painting depicting the attempted seduction of Susanna by the elders. The lettering below image, a recipe in verse, begins: "Take tacamahacca, an ounce & a half, a pound of good suet, from the skin of a calf, 3 barbicued apples, a ha'p'orth of pears, 3 dragon flies pounded, the ear wax of bears, a small peice of cheese, a little gum copal, some putrified salt with some essence of opal ..."

"The couple torment each other in the breakfast-room. A round table is drawn close to a blazing fire. The lady has left her seat to thump on the piano (left), singing loudly, with her back to her husband, but turning her eyes towards him. He sits in the corner of a sofa, crouching away from her, his hand over his ear, food stuffed into his mouth, reading the 'Sporting Calendar'. The pages of her open music-book are headed 'Forte'. Her song is: 'Torture Fiery Rage \ Despair I cannot can not bear'. On the piano lies music: 'Separation a Finale for Two Voices with Accompaniment'; on the floor is 'The Wedding Ring - a Dirge'. She wears a becoming morning gown with cap, but has lost the slim grace of British Museum Satires No. 10472, and her soft features have coarsened. Behind the piano a boisterous coarse-featured nurse hastens into the room holding a squalling infant, and flourishing a (watchman's) rattle. On the lady's chair is an open book, 'The Art of Tormenting', illustrated by a cat playing with a mouse. Her sunshade hangs from the back of the chair. On the breakfast-table are a large hissing urn, a tea-pot, a coffee-pot, &c., a bottle of 'Hollands' (beside the woman's place), and a (full) dish of muffins. The man's coffee-cup is full and steaming. He wears a dressing-gown with ungartered stockings and slippers. An air of dejection and ill-nature replaces his former good-humoured sprightliness. Under his feet lies a dog, 'Benedick', barking fiercely at an angry cat, poised on the back of the sofa. A square birdcage high on the wall is supported by branching antlers. In it two cockatoos screech angrily at each other, neglecting a nest of three young ones. Beside it (left) is a bust of 'Hymen' with a broken nose, and (right) a thermometer which has sunk almost to 'Freezing'. On the chimney-piece is a carved ornament: Cupid asleep under a weeping willow, his torch reversed, the arrows falling from his quiver. This is flanked by vases whose handles are twisted snakes which spit at each other."--British Museum online catalogue

"A lean middle-aged man reclines on a sofa, his face contorted with pain. A handkerchief over his head, and ungartered stockings suggest an interrupted nap. His left toe touches the ground; his right leg is drawn up, the toes bent. The bell-wire is broken. Above his head is a picture of a man turning a grindstone, and beside him are two volumes: 'Dr Buchan Family Médecine in 2 Vol', suggesting the hypochondriac. A cockatoo (left) screams at him, and he screams (words below the title): 'Ecot! it's Tied my foot in a Knot--Oh!--Oh!--O--O--o--o--o--'."--British Museum online catalogue

"A crowded interior. An old maid, grotesquely lean, spectacled, and hideous, sits in an arm-chair beside her fire (left) on which a concoction in a saucepan boils over, surrounded by fierce flames. This she stirs with a spoon but turns to the right to pore over the recipe, which is in her left hand. One bare foot with deformed toes rests on a stool beside which are a spike-toed high-heeled shoe and a stocking. A table beside her and the floor below it are crowded with bottles, jars, and medicaments, with a pestle and mortar and a lighted candle. The candle sets fire to her cap, and the flame reaches a little bird-cage hanging from the ceiling. A cat walks under her petticoats; a tiny lap-dog lies in a cushioned band-box lid at her feet. A second cat claws towards a mouse which runs up the pole of a perch on which stands, a draggled and angry cockatoo. A pug-dog also looks up at the bird. Against the wall is a stuffed cat in a glass case; above it is a burlesque picture of Susanna and the Elders. A neat curtained bed is on the right. The chimney-piece is decorated with Diana (burlesqued) urging on the hounds to seize Actæon. On it are three peacock's feathers, bottles, spills, a shell, a Chinese mandarin, &c. The fireplace is lined with pictorial Dutch tiles."--British Museum online catalogue, description of an earlier state

"In a plainly furnished room a whole family suffers. An elderly 'cit' and a skinny old woman register acute discomfort. Between their chairs is a round table on which is a dish of cherries and currants. A stout maidservant (left) drinks from a bottle she has taken from a store-cupboard. A little boy, a cat, and a dog are afflicted. A door opens into a bedroom (right) where a little girl relieves herself; another tries to kick her from her seat. On the wall are three shelves of books, among them 'Family Bible' and 'Family Phisician'. A magpie is in a wicker cage."--British Museum online catalogue

"The interior of a coffee-house, the customers, with one exception, deeply interested and dismayed at the news in a 'Gazette Extraordinary', which the title shows is that on the capture of the island of St. Eustatius by Rodney, see British Museum Satires Nos. 5827, 5837, &c, the 'Extraordinary Gazette' being that of 13 Feb. 1781. On each side of the room is an oblong table flanked by wooden settles. Between the tables and in the centre of the design three men stand, one of whom reads from a 'Gazette Extraordinary'. His two companions look at him with scowling attention; one, his hat under his arm, has both hands thrust deep into the pockets of his coat; the other holds his forehead, from which his wig has been pushed back. A dog gazes up at them. At the table on the left a man sits in full face gaping with dismay, his hands rest on the table grasping his knife and fork. Two men sit on opposite sides of the table on the right; one holds a glass in his left hand, while he looks up at the group with the newspaper. His vis-à-vis has turned sideways, his hands on his knees, with an expression of melancholy alarm. Behind him, one hand on the back of the settle, stands John Wilkes, conspicuous by his squint and his characteristic wig; he holds a glass of wine and frowns. At his side is a man leaning back asleep. A cockatoo's cage is hung from the roof, the bird head downwards, as if about to screech. Half of the dial of a large wall clock is visible on the extreme right. On the left is a folding screen."--British Museum online catalogue
