- Abstract:
- "The daughter of Count Platoff stands full face, erect, dashing, and alluring, on a snowy mound. Her right hand supports a spear from which floats a banner inscribed: 'I General Count Platoff. promise to give my Daughter in Marriage and 2000 Rubles - to any Cossack, Russian, Prusian, German, Sweede, Turk, John Bull, Sauny Bull Paddy Bull or any other Bull, who shall bring Me the Head of Little Bony dead or a live.' She wears fur-trimmed cap with a long hussar-bag, long high-waisted fur-bordered pelisse, with a cape, fur-trimmed boots, and large ear-rings. The words 'Hih "ho" for a Husband' issue from closed and smiling lips. With her left hand she points behind her to the right and to the little figure of Napoleon on skates, wearing a large plumed bicorne, and brandishing his sabre; he deserts his snow-bound army, saying, "O" ho" bygare I had best be Off." He strides past the heads of soldiers emerging from snow, together with bayonets, and a French flag; behind him the French army marches in close ranks, with one eagle and one flag. On the left is another column of tiny soldiers indicated by heads, bayonets, an eagle, and flags. In the clouds, airborne as in No. 11992 (British Museum catalogue), are two bands of galloping Cossacks, one (right) seems about to swoop down on Napoleon. Heavy clouds frame slanting rays which make a background for Platoff's daughter. At her feet are two money--bags both inscribed '1,000 Rubles', which disgorge coins. Behind them a kneeling Cupid aims his bow towards the 'cloud of Cossacks' on the left."--British Museum catalogue

- "A phrenologist, De Ville, in his consulting room, feels the forehead of a loutish gaping youth who kneels on a cushion at his feet. Behind the boy stands his stupid-looking mother, grinning with delight at her son. De Ville, who wears plain old-fashioned dress, has a grotesquely shaped skull fringed with scanty hair; his left hand rests on an open book on his table on which is a skull, numbered phrenologically and resting on a paper: Thurtell [murderer] shown to be Craniologically an Excellent Character. Behind him stands an assistant with a porcine profile writing in a note-book: Very large Wit N° 32. A large book-case covers much of the wall (right). - Abstract:
- A satire on Napoleon's Russian campaign. "Cossacks, led by Platoff, pursue, across a river, a fox with the head and huge bicorne of Napoleon. The Russians ride their horses through the water. The fox, larger in scale than the other figures, takes a flying leap to the shore (right). He says: "Hark, I hear the Cry of Cossacks. The [sic] have got Scent of me -I must take to my heels once more, the are close to my Brush." His tail is inscribed 'Corsican Fox'. Across the lower edge of the design runs a strip of land on which are frogs; one, inscribed 'French Frog', waddles off, while one on the extreme left is being speared. Of the other frogs a few turn to oppose the Cossacks with bayonets; these have a tricolour flag; the majority are escaping to the right, a row of heads and sloped bayonets, with one eagle. Platoff, whose high fur cap has a long plume inscribed 'Platoff', riding with levelled spear, shouts: "Hark forward my boys get along! he runs in view. Yoics. Yoics. There he goes, Tally-ho!" His daughter, in the middle distance, rides through the water, pointing with the hand that holds the reins, and raising a whip; she shouts: "Hi, ho, Tally, ho! For a husband." Cossacks gallop up from the background (left), leap from a low cliff into the river, and swim through it, one carrying a standard with the Russian eagle, behind the two Platoffs. In the background is a town flying a flag inscribed 'Leapsic'; tiny horsemen, evidently Cossacks, gallop out of the city gate."--British Museum online catalogue

A Dutchman personifying the Dutch Republic, threatened by Spain (left) kneels, hat in hand, before a military officer representing England, imploring help. A Spaniard stands (left) behind the Dutchman's back, his sword raised to strike, his left fist clenched, saying, "I am determined Mynheer you shall never rise more". On the right is another group of figures representing Holland, England, America, France, and Spain: A Dutchman on the extreme right, smoking a pipe, his hands in his breeches pocket, scowls at an English officer, saying, "I am now ye high & Mighty." (The States General of the United Provinces were addressed as Hogen Mogen, 'High Mightinesses'.) The Englishman, a drawn sword in his hand, says to him "Now is ye time to pay ye debt of Gratitude". America, an Indian holding a tomahawk, says to France, pointing to England, It shall never have my Colonies again. France, a French military officer with a drawn sword, wearing spurred jack-boots, points to England, saying, "begar me will have half his Possessions". Spain, in cloak and feathered hat, also with a drawn sword, stands behind France saying "Don Diego has vow'd the downfall of England." Beneath the design verses are engraved: "See Holland oppress'd by his old Spanish Foe, To England with cap in hand kneels very low, The Free-hearted Britton, dispels all its care, And raises it up from the brink of Dispair. But when three spitefull foes old England beset, The Dutchman refuses to pay a Just debt; With his hands in his pockets he says he'll stand Neuter, And England his Friend may be D------d for the Future.""--British Museum catalogue

- Abstract:
- "A country dance; eighteen couples in a strip design in the manner of the 'Long Minuet' (No. 7229), dance with awkward vigour; one of the most active ladies has a wooden leg. The first couple (left) face each other, the lady squinting violently. On the right a man turns eagerly from his elderly and offended partner to a young lady, whose partner also holds the hand of another lady, while an elderly man stands alone on the extreme right, holding his wig, and mopping his bald head. The elder men wear powdered hair with small pigtails, the younger ones have frizzed hair without powder, short or with small tails. Only one or two wear wigs. The women wear simple high-waisted gowns with elbow sleeves and long gloves; one wears a hat and long sleeves. All wear flat-heeled shoes, and have frizzed hair, short, or piled on the head; a few wear feathered bandeaux; one lady only has powdered hair. Some have strange hair ornaments: a fat and very decolletee lady with a lap-dog under her arm wears round her erect bush of hair a circlet from which project barbed zigzags, like lightning flashes. A youngish lady has on her head a bird with a barbed fang; an older one in spectacles wears a small windmill behind two drooping aigrettes. The neglected lady wears a tiny wheat-sheaf, her pretty rival a ship in full sail. Below the title: 'What an elegant Set-What a bustling of Rumps! What a Sweet Toe to Toe-ing of Slipers and Pumps! At the sight my Old Drumsticks are ready to Prance There is nothing I love so as seeing Folks Dance.'':--British Museum online catalogue

- "A broadside satirising the fall of James II; with an etching formerly attributed to de Hooghe. King James (1) lies in an ornate bed, wearing a Jesuit's cap encircled by a crown, vomiting a stream of reptiles with crowns, papal tiaras, cardinals' hats and Jesuit caps; further reptiles emerge from the foot of the bed where broken shackles lie on the floor.. In the centre stands the finely dressed Lord Mayor of London (2) holding his nose, a dog with a spiked collar at his side, and to the right Aldermen and Bishops (3). To the left, beside the bed, a double-faced physician (4) holds up a urinal in one hand while feeling the king's pulse with the other. The Lord Chancellor (5; George Jeffreys) stands on the other side of the bed, holding his nose and pointing to the doctor as the cause of the king's sickness. Mary of Modena (6) sits on the extreme right pointing across the room to the Prince of Wales. The Archbishop of Canterbury (7) stands behind her with the other bishops holding out his hand to receive a sealed package from a masked Jesuit (8). The Prince of Wales (9), holding an orb or ball and toy windmill is sitting in the lap of his nurse (10) who spoon-feeds him while she listens to a monk who gestures with his left hand as he speaks. Behind them Father Petre (11) receives a passport and is sent on his way together with Quakers and other sectaires (12) including Anabaptists surviving from the days of Cromwell. Through an archway in the background the sun rises on the Dutch fleet (13) setting sailing to bring relief to England. - "Marie Louise (left) sits on the edge of a canopied bed adjusting her garter (she is perhaps adapted from Mrs. Fitz-herbert in Gillray's 'The Morning after Marriage', British Museum Satires No. 7298). Her back is to Napoleon, who sits up in bed turning to the Devil (right) who approaches from behind the curtain, pitchfork in hand. The Emperor's hand rests on an open book: 'Aristotle's Master-piece or the Secrets of Nature Reveal'd'. He says: "My good friend I smell your approach, and know what you are come about, I am loth to part with Maria yet, and am consulting this book before I determine, yes! yes! she must sleep with her Aunts & Cousins if it is necessary for my Reputation I'll not he laughd at". The Devil, who is nude, with horns, webbed wings, and barbed tail, answers: "Poh! Poh! dont gammon me about books, you know your impotence, send her to Heaven, or I'll withdraw my protection and you'll come to Hell presto". Marie Louise says: "Oh dear! if this is the deligt's of Love I am surfeited already, to be sure few husbands disturb their wives rest more than mine does, but it's with starting & kicking in his sleep & crying have mercy on me. I suppose Josephine used to worry him so. bless me what a smell of brimstone there is!" - A satire on Napoleon. "The 'dwarf' (Lord Kirkcudbright) stands beside Glumdalclitch's empty chair at the dinner-table. A marrow-bone stands erect on the plate; from this emerges Napoleon, three-quarter length., wearing his bicorne and clenching both fists. The 'dwarf' says: "There you little insignificant Pigmy, I've Bone'd you." Kirkcudbright, in profile to the right., is based on Gillray's caricature, see BMSat 9905, head, figure, dress and sword being closely copied; but he stands chapeau-bras, and the arms and hands are differently posed: r. hand on the edge of the table, left hand held up derisively above Napoleon. - Abstract:
- "Ministers and others dance in a ring round a Green Bag (see British Museum Satires No. 13735) resting on a horizontal beam which is supported on a post. Round post and bag cling poisonous plants labelled 'Devils Bit', 'Enchanters Nightshade', 'Scorpion Grass', and 'Henbane'. The wide-mouthed bag is filled with Italian witnesses, clamouring with eager hands stretched towards Leach, the Vice-Chancellor, who stands in the centre of the bag, towering above them. In each hand he holds out a sheaf of bills or notes inscribed 'Promise'; he says: "Gentlemen a [sic] we are now about brining [sic] this business to a close, allow me to address a few words to you; as its not at all improbable that you may be d . . . d roughly handled by my Countrymen, be sure and be firm, stick one and all of you to your depositions--don't be brow beaten and thrown of your guard your priest will give you absolution, and here are some promises that will enable you to return home and buy Principalities.!!!" The witnesses answer: "Me want l'Argent"; "de Monte ... "; "Sacre Bleu de Monie"; "Monie M ..."; "Me no Sware widout Monie"; "No promise, de Monie"; "Si, Si, Diavilo de monies." The King stands behind the post, concealed from the waist up by the bag; his words float up towards Leach: "Why Deputy Bags [i.e. deputy to Eldon] could you not have picked out a more respectable set of Scoundrels." Facing the King, and in back view, are Sidmouth and Castlereagh, holding hands and capering delightedly. The former says: "Derry we want music, can't you whiste [sic] Lillibulero?" Castlereagh answers: "Faith Doctor I sing small, and can't whistle at all; you had [sic] give us a tune on your pipe" [the clyster-pipe hanging from Sidmouth's pocket, cf. British Museum Satires No. 9849]. The Attorney-General, Gifford, holds Sidmouth's left hand; he looks up at Leach, saying, "He is exalted sure enough! well! I hope to be in time! else wherfore breathe I in a Christian Land!" Canning, on the extreme left, holding the hands of Gifford and (?) Lord Harrowby, exclaims: "Egad I hope they won't cut his throat before he gets rid of them! what an exit for Vice!--" In his pocket is a paper: 'Canning jests'. Between Harrowby and the (concealed) King stands Wellington, less caricatured than the others; he says: "Why he has skimed the Very Scum of the Country Sire!" Holding Castlereagh's right hand is Lord Eldon, in Chancellor's wig and gown; he looks up at Leach, saying, "There you are Vice! up to your knees in iniquity!--" Next him and on the extreme right is Wilberforce, with lank hair and drawn-down mouth. He cries: "The Lord have mercy upon him and help him safe down again! what a cut throat Crew." Facing the Chancellor, and holding the King's left hand, is the Archbishop of Canterbury, fat and grinning (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13276); he says: "Our pious brother there Will by-force ejaculate something holy!" Between them is a partly concealed head."--British Museum online catalogue

- Abstract:
- "A satire on Lord Bute, his alleged relationship with the Princess of Wales, his supposed influence over the King and his use of writers as to defend his policies. Bute is represented by a boot set up on a pedestal on which is written "English places for Scotch Asses". A large thistle grows from the top of the boot and it is pierced by an arrow lettered "N. Britton". The Princess of Wales stands on the other side of the boot holding a shield with a thistle on it and saying “I'll present my Shield while thou canst Stand and raise thee up when thou art fallen”. At her feet a young lion, George III crouches saying “Tho they don’t shoot at me the darts fall very near”. Three Scotsmen stand behind commenting on the onslaught. Beyond the pedestal Arthur Murphy holds up a shield lettered "The Auditor", beside him Tobias Smollett holds the shield of "The Britton"; both shields have been damaged, the Briton by an arrow labelled "Monitor" that has been fired by Arthur Beardmore, editor of that journal. Beside Beardmore, on the right, Charles Churchill, in clerical dress, having just torn Murphy's shield and pierced the boot, lowers his bow saying “My country's good directs me where to aim”. Beside him the duke of Cumberland praises Churchill’s shot; next to the Duke, Earl Temple, also holding a bow, declares “We’ll down with this Scotch fool”; standing close behind him, William Pitt adds “’tis the general Cause Our Liberty”. Two columns of etched verse beneath."--British Museum online catalogue

- Abstract:
- "A huge bull, snorting fire, rushes with lowered head towards a French fort (left) from which cannon-balls descend upon him. Beneath the fort sansculottes on one knee fire at the bull while standing French soldiers, correctly dressed, also fire. On the fortress stand Frenchmen, firing and waving their hats; they shout: "Vive la republic, Blood & plunder, no Quarter to John Bull!" A huge tricolour flag has a staff surmounted by a skull. To the bull's back is strapped a bundle inscribed 'Debt Debt'. One horn has been shot off and lies on the ground. To his left hind leg is chained a heavy weight inscribed 'Subsidies'. Nevertheless, he cries: "Now my brave Allies let us all stand firm together & make a bold push, & I'll be Answerable for the Event." But behind him (right) his allies have all turned their backs and are departing in directions indicated by signposts. A fat Dutchman smoking a pipe goes 'To Amsterdam', saying, "I care not who beats, I'll join the Strongest Party". Frederick William II (father-in-law of the Duke of York) walks off 'To Berlin', saying, "I've fingerd the Cash from both Sides, & will now employ it to Secure the Partition of Poland"; "Negociate with Robertspierre privately & then - Damn Relationship!!!" Next, a Spanish don, Charles IV, goes 'To Madrid', saying, "Whats the Bourbon Family to me when they Impede my Interest. Hush!! I am now treating for a Separate peace with that Blackguard Roberspere to Secure my own Crown - I must enlarge the Powers of the Inquisition". On the extreme right Francis II and Mack in a two-wheeled gig, on which is the Habsburg eagle, are driving off 'To Vienna'. The Emperor says: "Well Mack we have made a Glorious Campaign of it; of what use are the Low Countries without they continue to fill my Coffers? As for John Bull, let him settle the business as he can he loves to be meddling"."--British Museum online catalogue
