"Bonaparte (left) and Cornwallis play chess. Bonaparte, not caricatured, alert and military, wearing his large plumed cocked hat, leans forward, pointing to his move; his left arm lies on the table and in his left hand is his sheathed sabre. He says: "Check to your King, remember it is not the first time, and I think a very few Manoeuvres more will completely convince you that I am better acquainted with the Game I am playing than you are aware of." Cornwallis, plump and civilian despite his regimentals and profession, sits without a hat, scratching his head apprehensively. He says: "Curse it I shall lose this Game; You are too much for me." He wears his ribbon and star, 'Honi soit' on his garter. The chairs are symbolical: that of Bonaparte has ormolu laurel wreaths, the legs are formed of fasces and axes; that of Cornwallis, with plain oval back, suggests an English drawing-room."--British Museum online catalogue

"A wild affray round a circular gaming-table seen at close range, only the heads and shoulders of those on the nearer side of the table being visible. An angry military officer wearing a cocked hat, with an empty wallet on the table before him, leans forward aiming his pistol at a lean and elderly man whose 'chapeau bras' and long pigtail indicate that he is French. The latter covers a pile of guineas with his hand and aims a pistol at his assailant. Some of the players are falling over in their eagerness to escape. Between the combatants, and on the further side of the table, one man holds a chair above his head, about to smite the officer; a fellow-officer raises a bottle and a candle-stick to strike the Frenchman. All the persons (sixteen) are in violent action, with which their expressions correspond. Some are in flight, others about to intervene. "A corner of the opera house. A dancer is poised on her right toe, while she leans forward, both arms extended, her left leg extended horizontally towards the audience. Her head is turned full-face. Those in the pit are peering under her skirt, which, falling limply almost to her ankles, defines her figure. In the front row of the pit sit (left to right) the Duke of Queensberry peering through an opera-glass; Sheridan, biting his thumb apprehensively (probably fearing competition with Drury Lane); Fox, leaning back laughing, while Pitt stands behind him, holding his shoulders, and staring intently at the dancer. Among the heads behind are Burke on the extreme right, Bedford next him, then Loughborough and Erskine (?) in their legal wigs. In a box on the first tier sit two ladies and a man, looking down upon the dancer, except that one of the ladies stares at the man she sits next through a glass. A door giving on to the stage is open, through which two men are staring up at the dancer. Behind stands a prim-looking man wearing spectacles. "Turkish soldiers, scattered over a wide parade-ground, are being instructed in squads, groups, and as individuals, by French officers. In the foreground a Turkish potentate, the Sultan or perhaps the Grand Vizier, leans against the stump of a tree, turning his head in profile to the left to watch the soldiers. At his feet (left) kneels a Black enslaved person who is filling a long pipe; beside him a fire burns on a tiny tripod. On the right a Frenchman pulls the long moustache of a Turk, striking him with his cane. Next, three awkward Turks are being taught musket drill. On the left a Turk threatens an officer, drawing his sabre. In the middle distance a Frenchman puts his hand on the projecting stomach of an obese Turk, to make his attitude more soldierly. In the background are a marching squad (left) and a firing squad (right) and, beyond, an officer is attacked by three Turks with sabres raised to strike. Behind (left) is a Turkish fort. "Napoleon, pushing an officer before him through a pillared doorway, looks back to speak to a monk and a sansculotte, shackled together, who drag a car in which is an imperial crown. They hold a large scroll inscribed: 'Most religious Sovereign - the benefactor of the church - the patron of liberty - the scourge of tyrants, and the defender of our most holy religion; may you long fill the Imperial Chair, and diffuse over a free and happy people all the blessings of your auspicious government.' Demons fly round a tricolour flag which floats from the car. Napoleon holds out a scroll headed: 'Address, &c. &c. &c. The Legions of France congratu - ', saying, "This token of your gratitude, my dear subjects will ever stimulate me to protect your liberties - to promote your happiness - and to preserve my empire from the ravages of war, tyranny and oppression." The officer, with a cynical smile, says: "Patron of Liberty - Defender of our most holy Religion - free and happy People - Ha! ha! ha! - What may we not expect? - Has he not got them under excellent subjection?" On the left is Napoleon's 'Secret Chamber': a table is covered with maps and plans; a large map, partly unrolled, shows Europe from '[En]gland to [Tur]key', including the 'Black Sea'; another map shows 'Suez' and the 'Red Sea'. A demon under the table holds up a large pile of papers: 'Plans against England'; on the floor are similar piles: 'Religion' and 'Treaties'. There are also 'Plans against Germany and Turkey', and a paper: 'Mem. the chance of the conquest of England is worth the sacrifice of one third of the people of France. Item. As Charlemaine not only conquered Italy, but the whole of Germany, and left the Imperial dignity hereditary in the Sovereigns of France, it is indispensably necessary to obtain possession of Germany, in order to support the dignity of the Gallic empire.' On the wall are three pictures: 'Sacking of Rome', 'Dissolution of the National Assembly' [see British Museum Satires No. 9426, &c], and 'View of Cairo' [see British Museum Satires No. 9358, &c.]. Below the design: 'Explanation. The two figures bringing the Imperial crown . . . represent . . . the bitter Enemies of Aristocracy, and the staunch Supporters of the late Monarchial Government, tackled to the National Machine, and reduced to the most abject State of Slavery by the Influence of the Military, whose congratulatory Address Bonaparte has received at the Hand of an Officer, and is introducing him into his Secret Chamber to receive Instructions. "Napoleon, scarcely caricatured, stands in the centre of the design, pointing with left forefinger to a pile of cannon-balls in the right foreground inscribed 'Forse, meat Balls for the Lads of Paris'. Just behind him, and emerging from clouds, stand the Devil (left) and Death (right), directing his actions. Napoleon is flanked by two much taller supporters: an Italian brigand holding up a pole inscribed 'Plunder' to which a limp purse is tied, and with a pistol in his left hand. On the right is a savage dishevelled butcher, holding up a knife, with a noose in the right hand. Both wear belted tunics. These three are identified by an inscription below the design: 'Capt of Starved Banditty from the Alps, Ad Camp,, The Aghast Emperor & his two Friends & Pillars of the State,, Butcher from Elba. Generalissimo'. All are dominated by a larger figure, emerging from clouds above Napoleon's head, which has a scaly body and streaming hair, styled 'Deamon of War Presideing over the Tyrant'. His extended right hand points to the words 'Boundless Ambition' in large letters on a background of fire and lightning of which he is the centre. In his left hand is the shaft of a pennant inscribed: 'We, Come, to Redres:s Grievances'. Dark clouds and lightning extend left and right over ranks of soldiers in the middle distance who watch Napoleon. Those on the right are a ragged, dilapidated, and motley crew, some with pitchforks; they shout "Vive la Empre . . . [sic]" and "Vive la Boun. . . ." In the background, a woman can be seen through the archway of the inn standing on a bench and reaching up to clip the wings of a cockerel; a door beside the arch, lettered, "Bon Chere icy chez La Grenouille / Traiteur", is open to reveal a ladder up which a cook has climbed in order to catch three cats running along a wall; he holds a knife in his hand. The elderly French postilion (left) drinks from a large tankard, holding bones and meat in his left hand. He is caricatured; he wears a cocked hat with tricolour cockade, laced waistcoat, and large boots. His hair is in a long queue. The young English postilion, wearing neat riding-dress with well-fitting boots, and fashionable double-breasted waistcoat, points at him, turning with a smile to a stable-hand (right) who leans grinning against the door-post. "Three volunteers or militiamen, three-quarter length figures, exult at the head of Bonaparte which one of them (right) holds up on a pitchfork, saying, "Here he is Exalted my Lads 24 Hours after Landing." The head is in profile to the left, the sharp well-cut features contrast with those of the chubby yokels. The centre figure, holding out his hat, says, turning to the left: "Why Harkee, d'ye zee, I never liked Soldiering afore, but some how or other when I though [sic] of our Sal the bearns, the poor pigs, the Cows and the Geese, why I could have killed the whole Army my own Self." The third man (left) in regimentals, but round-shouldered and unsoldierly, says: "Dang my Buttons if that beant the Head of that Rogue Boney - I told our Squire this Morning, what do you think say's I the Lads of our Village can't cut up a Regiment of them French Mounsheers, and as soon as the Lasses had given us a Kiss for good luck I could have sworn we should do it and so we have." All three have hats turned up with favours and oak-twigs, the favours being inscribed respectively (left to right): 'Hearts of Oak'; 'Britons never will be Slaves', and 'We'll fight and We'll Conquer again and again'. In the spaces between these foreground figures is seen a distant encounter between English horse and foot and French invaders, who are being driven into the sea, on which are flat-bottomed boats, all on a very small scale. The King is followed by Lord Shelburne (William Petty), mimicking both the royal posture and dress, and holding a rolled document signed 'Preliminaries." Their orderly progress is watched by a lean, simply dressed man holding in his right hand a scourge with many lashes and the word "America" between them. "A sequel to British Museum Satires No. 10518, Gillray's 'Tiddy-Doll'. Napoleon, haggard and desperate, wearing tattered uniform without the former apron and sword, walks in profile to the left, carrying on his head a large tray. On this stand three gingerbread kings, burlesqued and mutilated, with two queens, a detached head (crowned), and (right) a pile of imperial emblems: crowns, mitre, sceptre, eagle, flag, &c. On the left a bonnet rouge hangs from a staff. In the middle stands an imperial eagle with a tricolour flag to which is tied a broom showing that the contents of the tray are for sale. Napoleon says (with grimly closed mouth): "Buy my Image! Here's my nice little Gingerbread Emperor & Kings Retail and for Exportation!" Behind him is a tumbledown thatched hovel; over an aperture where more gingerbread figures are displayed is a board: 'Tiddy-Doll Gingerbread Baker. NB Removed from Paris.' Above fly three of the (carrion) birds associated in these prints with Elba. Napoleon walks towards the sea; across the water (in France) tiny figures dance holding hands round a white flag inscribed 'Vivent les Bourbons' and topped by a fleur-de-lis. Behind them is the gable-end of a rustic inn: 'The Kings Head New Revived'. "The interior of a tent. Duroc, in his shirt, lies supported by a soldier on a wooden bed, while Napoleon (right) holds his right hand, turning away (to the right) and covering his face with his left hand. An officer stands solicitously beside the Emperor, supporting his left elbow. Another officer stands (left) behind the head of the low bed. On the extreme left a soldier bends over a table compounding medicaments. Duroc's coat and sword lie on a camp-stool, beside his hat and boots. A glimpse of the distant camp is seen on the extreme right, where a Mameluke stands by the tent holding Napoleon's horse. Duroc is addressing the Emperor, with his left arm extended. Their words are etched below the title: "Duroc, "My whole life has been consecrated to your service, nor do I regret its loss, but for the use it still might have been of to your Buonaparte, "Duroc!" there is a life to come; it is there you are going to wait for me, and where we shall one day meet again!" "Two designs placed side by side, the title so arranged that 'The Contrast' applies to both, the first four and last two words to the two designs respectively. [1] A scene outside Jaffa where the French flag flies from a fort on a rock at whose base are hospital tents (left), in which the sick can be seen. In the foreground Napoleon (a poor portrait) points with an imperious gesture to a bottle of 'Opium' in the hand of a distressed doctor in civilian dress. He says: "Don't talk to me of Humanity & the feelings of a generous heart, I say Poison those Sick dogs they are a burthen to me, & can no longer fight my Battles!!! I say destroy them - As for those Turks, them up in the Garrison, turn all the Guns upon them, Men, Women, & Children & blow them to atoms, they are too bold & resolute for me to suffer them to live, they are in my Way." In the middle distance (left) is a body of Turks, their arms tied behind them, guarded by a French soldier who points at Napoleon. Behind Napoleon two French officers exchange glances, acutely dismayed at the orders." ... [2] Two black soldiers, in neat regimentals, prepare to kill three haggard French officers. One raises an axe to smite a bound prisoner. "A mounted officer with drawn sabre heads a procession of 'Volunteers' linked by a chain to his horse and to each other. The horse is a well-bred animal with handsome trappings, but the rider is lean and has torn breeches. He is followed by a file of three whose necks are attached to the horse and whose hands or arms are pinioned. All are miserable wretches, barelegged and ragged; the last, less abject, has sabots and takes snuff. He is chained to the neck of a donkey on whose back is a pannier containing three despairing conscripts. To the animal's tail is tied a low truck on which a moribund shackled man lies on his back, his knees drawn up. To the truck is chained, in a stooping position, a man whose hands are tied behind his back, his nails being long talons. Birds, scenting carrion, fly towards the procession. "A newly invented French telegraph (semaphore) stands on the coast, with the head of Fox, in back view but looking to the right with a fiercely determined expression. The crossbeam represents his arms and the arms of the semaphore; the raised right hand holds a lantern which lights up the French fleet (in full sail for England) and a fort on the French coast flying a large tricolour flag inscribed 'République'. The left hand points downwards and to the left to a dark cluster of roofs and spires dominated by St. Paul's. The base of the telegraph is circular and of brick. A line of seven figures all caricatured with animalistic features, marching right to left, shown full-length. The first character blows a horn, carries a violin and bow in his hands and on a string around his waist another horn with smoke coming out hangs over his behind; he is wearing spectacles and a scarf aroung his head as well as a Roman-style pink dress; he has wings and appears to have a breast. In the text above his head: En avant la renommeé? Sur l'air: j'ai du bon tabac, dans Misantropie et repentir. The second figure is wearing Roman armour and carries a long-handled pan; he has claws for hands, a bird's face and tail feathers. On top of his helmet sits a rat. The text above his head reads: Tais toi! Geulard, vilain menteur de Constitutionel; j' t'ai dis que l'premier qui tomeroit sous ma griffe, il aura beau crier ... la mort ... aura.." The third figure with a large belly has a highly caricatured face with large, exaggerated features and fangs; he wears a bonnet. He is armed with a knife hanging in his belt as well as a long sword on a chain. Above his head are the words: Mais, mon Capitaine t'as dis qu't' allois les prendre en flanc j' l'aime bien, moi, l'flanc, tu m'en donneras? .. ain!" The fourth and fifth figures both have wolf-like faces. The one also has a tail and carries a hoe and a basket with a second wicker basket on his back. The writing above his head, " Qu' est-ce qu' en veut? Des lettres de falaise, en voulez vous d' la Chicorée?" The other's clothes are tattered and short, with a sash around his waist; he wears a straw hat and smokes a pipe. Above his head is written, "J' vons avertir not' Capitaine, qu' j'ons vu' à la Rapée des Goujons ... ultras. The final two, both with large snouts and fangs, surround a cannon, the one is pulling it and the other standing crossed-armed looking angrily at his companion in conversation with the figure ahead of him. Above their heads, first, "On dit qu' i' z'ont l'vent su' nous mais c'est qu' j' disque p'tite pluis abat grand vents" and last "On! si j' pouvois attraper l'beau local (l' bocal) aux Conichons ... "French soldiers are being cooked or drowned in a big round vat built of stone, under which a fire is burning. Blücher (left) and Wellington (right) stand over the vat, holding long-handled perforated ladles with which they skim the surface of the water, fishing out the soldiers. Blücher (left), saying "Mon cher Welington je commence a écumer j'espere que vous me Seconderez," holds on his level ladle a hussar in large busby, braided tunic, and boots. Wellington holds up on his (tilted) ladle a man hanging head downwards. Beside the vat (right) is a rocky cone from a fissure in which the flames of Hell emerge; Cerberus, a monster with three serpentine necks and webbed wings, reaches from the opening towards Wellington's captive, and devours his legs with two of his great jaws. "Napoleon (left) and Joseph sit side by side on low seats or stools, both with a hand on each knee. They have large, elongated heads broadly caricatured (as in British Museum Satires No. 10604, &c.) and look sideways at each other with drawn-down mouths and wrinkled foreheads. Napoleon is in uniform, wearing a feathered bicorne; Joseph wears a crown with Spanish dress, ermine-trimmed robe, and the order of the Golden Fleece. His seat is, very inconspicuously, a commode. At his feet is a sceptre with a scroll inscribed 'Servata Fides Cineri'. Napoleon says: "A pretty piece of Business we have made of it Brother Joe." Admiral Rodney is depicted receiving the submission of the defeated De Grasse after the Battle of the Saints, as English sailors bring ashore the spoils of war, and chagrined politicians Fox, Keppel, and the Duke of Richmond look on from the left, with Sandwich and North behind them. Contrasts the new ministry's hostility to the popular Rodney with the rewarding of the incompetent Keppel (Admiral "Lee-shore.").
