"Bonaparte (left) and Cornwallis play chess. Bonaparte, not caricatured, alert and military, wearing his large plumed cocked hat, leans forward, pointing to his move; his left arm lies on the table and in his left hand is his sheathed sabre. He says: "Check to your King, remember it is not the first time, and I think a very few Manoeuvres more will completely convince you that I am better acquainted with the Game I am playing than you are aware of." Cornwallis, plump and civilian despite his regimentals and profession, sits without a hat, scratching his head apprehensively. He says: "Curse it I shall lose this Game; You are too much for me." He wears his ribbon and star, 'Honi soit' on his garter. The chairs are symbolical: that of Bonaparte has ormolu laurel wreaths, the legs are formed of fasces and axes; that of Cornwallis, with plain oval back, suggests an English drawing-room."--British Museum online catalogue

"A wild affray round a circular gaming-table seen at close range, only the heads and shoulders of those on the nearer side of the table being visible. An angry military officer wearing a cocked hat, with an empty wallet on the table before him, leans forward aiming his pistol at a lean and elderly man whose 'chapeau bras' and long pigtail indicate that he is French. The latter covers a pile of guineas with his hand and aims a pistol at his assailant. Some of the players are falling over in their eagerness to escape. Between the combatants, and on the further side of the table, one man holds a chair above his head, about to smite the officer; a fellow-officer raises a bottle and a candle-stick to strike the Frenchman. All the persons (sixteen) are in violent action, with which their expressions correspond. Some are in flight, others about to intervene. "A corner of the opera house. A dancer is poised on her right toe, while she leans forward, both arms extended, her left leg extended horizontally towards the audience. Her head is turned full-face. Those in the pit are peering under her skirt, which, falling limply almost to her ankles, defines her figure. In the front row of the pit sit (left to right) the Duke of Queensberry peering through an opera-glass; Sheridan, biting his thumb apprehensively (probably fearing competition with Drury Lane); Fox, leaning back laughing, while Pitt stands behind him, holding his shoulders, and staring intently at the dancer. Among the heads behind are Burke on the extreme right, Bedford next him, then Loughborough and Erskine (?) in their legal wigs. In a box on the first tier sit two ladies and a man, looking down upon the dancer, except that one of the ladies stares at the man she sits next through a glass. A door giving on to the stage is open, through which two men are staring up at the dancer. Behind stands a prim-looking man wearing spectacles. "Turkish soldiers, scattered over a wide parade-ground, are being instructed in squads, groups, and as individuals, by French officers. In the foreground a Turkish potentate, the Sultan or perhaps the Grand Vizier, leans against the stump of a tree, turning his head in profile to the left to watch the soldiers. At his feet (left) kneels a Black enslaved person who is filling a long pipe; beside him a fire burns on a tiny tripod. On the right a Frenchman pulls the long moustache of a Turk, striking him with his cane. Next, three awkward Turks are being taught musket drill. On the left a Turk threatens an officer, drawing his sabre. In the middle distance a Frenchman puts his hand on the projecting stomach of an obese Turk, to make his attitude more soldierly. In the background are a marching squad (left) and a firing squad (right) and, beyond, an officer is attacked by three Turks with sabres raised to strike. Behind (left) is a Turkish fort. "Napoleon, pushing an officer before him through a pillared doorway, looks back to speak to a monk and a sansculotte, shackled together, who drag a car in which is an imperial crown. They hold a large scroll inscribed: 'Most religious Sovereign - the benefactor of the church - the patron of liberty - the scourge of tyrants, and the defender of our most holy religion; may you long fill the Imperial Chair, and diffuse over a free and happy people all the blessings of your auspicious government.' Demons fly round a tricolour flag which floats from the car. Napoleon holds out a scroll headed: 'Address, &c. &c. &c. The Legions of France congratu - ', saying, "This token of your gratitude, my dear subjects will ever stimulate me to protect your liberties - to promote your happiness - and to preserve my empire from the ravages of war, tyranny and oppression." The officer, with a cynical smile, says: "Patron of Liberty - Defender of our most holy Religion - free and happy People - Ha! ha! ha! - What may we not expect? - Has he not got them under excellent subjection?" On the left is Napoleon's 'Secret Chamber': a table is covered with maps and plans; a large map, partly unrolled, shows Europe from '[En]gland to [Tur]key', including the 'Black Sea'; another map shows 'Suez' and the 'Red Sea'. A demon under the table holds up a large pile of papers: 'Plans against England'; on the floor are similar piles: 'Religion' and 'Treaties'. There are also 'Plans against Germany and Turkey', and a paper: 'Mem. the chance of the conquest of England is worth the sacrifice of one third of the people of France. Item. As Charlemaine not only conquered Italy, but the whole of Germany, and left the Imperial dignity hereditary in the Sovereigns of France, it is indispensably necessary to obtain possession of Germany, in order to support the dignity of the Gallic empire.' On the wall are three pictures: 'Sacking of Rome', 'Dissolution of the National Assembly' [see British Museum Satires No. 9426, &c], and 'View of Cairo' [see British Museum Satires No. 9358, &c.]. Below the design: 'Explanation. The two figures bringing the Imperial crown . . . represent . . . the bitter Enemies of Aristocracy, and the staunch Supporters of the late Monarchial Government, tackled to the National Machine, and reduced to the most abject State of Slavery by the Influence of the Military, whose congratulatory Address Bonaparte has received at the Hand of an Officer, and is introducing him into his Secret Chamber to receive Instructions. "Napoleon, scarcely caricatured, stands in the centre of the design, pointing with left forefinger to a pile of cannon-balls in the right foreground inscribed 'Forse, meat Balls for the Lads of Paris'. Just behind him, and emerging from clouds, stand the Devil (left) and Death (right), directing his actions. Napoleon is flanked by two much taller supporters: an Italian brigand holding up a pole inscribed 'Plunder' to which a limp purse is tied, and with a pistol in his left hand. On the right is a savage dishevelled butcher, holding up a knife, with a noose in the right hand. Both wear belted tunics. These three are identified by an inscription below the design: 'Capt of Starved Banditty from the Alps, Ad Camp,, The Aghast Emperor & his two Friends & Pillars of the State,, Butcher from Elba. Generalissimo'. All are dominated by a larger figure, emerging from clouds above Napoleon's head, which has a scaly body and streaming hair, styled 'Deamon of War Presideing over the Tyrant'. His extended right hand points to the words 'Boundless Ambition' in large letters on a background of fire and lightning of which he is the centre. In his left hand is the shaft of a pennant inscribed: 'We, Come, to Redres:s Grievances'. Dark clouds and lightning extend left and right over ranks of soldiers in the middle distance who watch Napoleon. Those on the right are a ragged, dilapidated, and motley crew, some with pitchforks; they shout "Vive la Empre . . . [sic]" and "Vive la Boun. . . ." In the background, a woman can be seen through the archway of the inn standing on a bench and reaching up to clip the wings of a cockerel; a door beside the arch, lettered, "Bon Chere icy chez La Grenouille / Traiteur", is open to reveal a ladder up which a cook has climbed in order to catch three cats running along a wall; he holds a knife in his hand. He is caricatured; he wears a cocked hat with tricolour cockade, laced waistcoat, and large boots. His hair is in a long queue. The young English postilion, wearing neat riding-dress with well-fitting boots, and fashionable double-breasted waistcoat, points at him, turning with a smile to a stable-hand (right) who leans grinning against the door-post.
