Similar to Briquet 7629?., Script: Copied by one hand in Humanistica Cursiva Libraria/Formata., A few geometrical figures., Pages slightly damaged by the acidity of the ink., and Binding: Original limp parchment, a large circle traced with a sharp pencil on the front cover, a group of small circles in the form of a cross on the rear cover. At the top left corner of the front cover a paper label with the 16th-17th century inscription in Humanistica Cursiva: "Mathematicorum. Anonymi arithmetica manu scripta linguae Italicae". On the spine is written in the same type of script "Aritmetica" and, at the top, the letter "A".

In Greek., Watermarks: Part I: Harlfinger Ancre 51 (1540, 1541 A. D.). Part II: similar to those in Part I. Part III: Harlfinger Lettres 66., Script: Each part written by a different scribe, all in Greek minuscule. Part I by Valeriano da Forli, who also wrote marginal notes in red and labelled the diagrams., Part I: Headpiece, 3- and 2-line initials with stylized floral motifs and headings in red. Diagrams in margins of geometrical figures drawn with compass. Part II: Headings in red. Diagrams drawn with compass and ruler, labelled in red, and fitted into written space. Part III: 2- to 1-line initials with stylized floral motifs and headings in pale red., Waterstains throughout. On f. 57r, spills, dirt and pen trials; several words effaced or obscured. Discoloration on ff. 1r and 78v suggests that this part was once separate., and Binding: Nineteenth century. Vellum case with a gold-tooled title.

Description:
Binding: 19th-20th centuries, Eastern Europe (?). The back pastedown consists of a portion of a Latin parchment document dated 1374. Front pastedown removed and preserved as Marston MS 89A. Sewn on three supports laced into thick oak boards and wedged. Plain wound endbands on alum-tawed cores originally laced into the boards. Covered with parchment with irregularly serrated turn-ins, with a strap-and-pin fastening, the pin on the upper board. The codex has been so tightly rebacked that it is difficult to open., Parchment stained and warped by damp., Plain intials, 6- to 2-line, red, blue or black, occasionally with modest pen design in red (e.g., ff. 27v-28r). Numerous diagrams and charts throughout., Purchased from G. Heilburn of Paris in 1951 by L. C. Witten who sold it in 1953 to Thomas E. Marston., and Script: Written by multiple scribes (some copying or correcting only brief portions of text) in late caroline minuscule.

A1r (art. 1) is in calligraphic Humanistica Cursiva Formata. A few titles in Capitalis., The decorative frames on ff. A1r and B1r are traced in brown ink. The upper half of the former contains a baroque cartouche in brown and red, containing a monogram apparently consisting of the letters A, K and M. Art. 2 opens with a flourished initial, art. 7 with a calligraphic initial, both in red., and No binding.

Numerous and often extensive marginal notes by various 13th and 14th century hands, mostly in small rapid cursive handwriting, some in Italian Gothica Hybrida Libraria., Red paragraph marks and 2-3-line plain initials with guide-letters; on f. 1r a larger flourished littera duplex inbrown and red; the other artt. open with larger plain initials. Numerous pointing hands. Pen-and-ink drawings and diagrams throughout., and Binding: Early, heavy wooden boards recovered with new brown sheepskin.
