Philip Kearny, nephew of S. W. Kearny, writes to John Walker at General Scott’s office regarding a certificate of merit for the men in Company "F" 1st Dragoons, expressing his regret for the omission of a recommendation for Scott’s orderly, Macrae.
A letter discussing the inequalities and lack of scale in the brevet system which affects many of the men fighting in the Mexican War. General Kearny is disturbed that Lt. Elwell has not received a brevet promotion for his heroic service and harshly criticizes General Harney’s actions.
