Wellington, sword in hand, falls from his horse, his white trousers crashing into a patch of cow-dung. Abstract:: "Three visitors regard with amusement a soldier who acts as barber. A soldier sits (left) outside a tent, his hair lank and undressed, his chin lathered, a cloth round his neck. The barber stands flourishing a razor; he is in full regimentals, wearing a busby, with intrenching tools (a spade and axe) thrust through his belt. Facing him in profile to the left stands a lady with a man in riding-dress on each side of her; one points, the others raise their hands in amused surprise. A grinning black boy in livery, wearing a turban and carrying a riding-whip, stands behind them. A sentry stands on duty beside the tent with his musket across his shoulder. Another soldier stands on the extreme right, his hands crossed on his breast. A row of tents, backed by trees and the contour of a hill, forms a background. Abstract:: "Plate from the 'Satirist', xiii. 193. In the text the title continues '. . ., "alias" War'. A satire on the Congress of Prague. Four sovereigns, completely unlike the men in question, in conference. The Tsar sits behind a small rectangular table on which are displayed implements of war in miniature: cannon, pyramids of cannon-balls, muskets, swords, drums, &c., and flags on one of which are fleurs-de-lis. On the left stand the King of Prussia and the Emperor of Austria, on the right is Napoleon. Alexander extends his hands rhetorically, turning to the left, with a puckered scowl, to say to the two Germans: "Come Gentlemen see first if you can agree--if not we'll all fight!" He has quasi-Kalmuck features, and wears an odd-shaped crown, an ermine-bordered robe, with a jewelled necklace and a Greek cross. Frederick William III, on the extreme left, clutches the hilt of his sword and puts his left hand to his cocked hat as if ready to doff it, he turns to Francis I, towards whom a label issues from his mouth: "I am ready to treat or to fight"; a second label floats to the left, inscribed 'Infernal Scoundrel'. Francis I, looking distracted, stands directed to the right, legs apart, and in his left hand is his sabre, the blade of which curves over the Tsar's head, but both hands touch his crown, and he says: "I will wear an independant Crown." He wears hussar uniform, cloak, sash, and elaborately embroidered tunic and pantaloons. Napoleon, tall and burly, with heavy whisker and aquiline profile, wears a plumed bicorne with tricolour cockade and very tattered uniform leaving his legs almost bare, with one dilapidated jack-boot and one damaged stocking; he has a long sword. He stands aggressively with arms dramatically extended, saying, "My Friends! all we wish is Peace." A chain is attached to each great toe, which is fastened to the necks of two miserable princes, tiny figures standing between his outstretched legs. One (left), Charles IV of Spain, wearing a crown and robe, grotesquely knock-kneed and despairing, stands full-face. The other, wearing a crown with uniform and sword, stoops in profile, looking up abjectly at Napoleon's legs. On the extreme right, in the middle distance, is a tall Spanish don, much emaciated, wrapped in a cloak. He looks down with folded arms at a fat British officer beside him, who says: "I ll countenance Austria into our interests." The Spaniard: "I'll be damned if I go to meet a Frenchman in Prague, while there is a Frenchman to meet in Spain!!!" Behind them in the background a tiny Napoleon, wearing a grotesque crown and holding a sword, marches downhill at the head of his soldiers carrying flags; he has a melancholy expression and approaches the edge of a precipitous descent."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:: "A wild affray round a circular gaming-table seen at close range, only the heads and shoulders of those on the nearer side of the table being visible. An angry military officer wearing a cocked hat, with an empty wallet on the table before him, leans forward aiming his pistol at a lean and elderly man whose 'chapeau bras' and long pigtail indicate that he is French. The latter covers a pile of guineas with his hand and aims a pistol at his assailant. Some of the players are falling over in their eagerness to escape. Between the combatants, and on the further side of the table, one man holds a chair above his head, about to smite the officer; a fellow-officer raises a bottle and a candle-stick to strike the Frenchman. All the persons (sixteen) are in violent action, with which their expressions correspond. Some are in flight, others about to intervene. Abstract:: "Soldiers march impassively in double file through a crowded street, and over the prostrate bodies of those whom they have overthrown. Military arrogance and foppishness are personified by the officer, much caricatured, with a grotesquely elongated waist (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7352). He places one toe on the body of a fish-woman who lies on her back, her legs much exposed. His outstretched right leg is poised above a crouching woman who tries to protect her barrow of vegetables. Two men holding muskets precede the officer; one tramples on the face of an infant. The officer is followed by a man carrying a pike, behind whom march six soldiers in double file carrying muskets with fixed bayonets. All march ruthlessly, eyes front, regardless of the havoc they are causing. A porter lies on the ground clutching a broken wooden case faintly inscribed 'Mr . . . Silversmith'; from it pour plate and jewels. The porter's knee is badly damaged, and his knot has been knocked from his shoulders. A milliner or courtesan lies on her back clutching the hair of a barber who clasps her leg. On the extreme right a prostrate woman tries to protect her infant, and a newsboy with his horn and a sheaf of the 'Morning Herald' tries to escape from the trampling soldiers. Other victims between the soldiers and the wall are a woman with a crutch, a shoeblack, a man with a tray of rolls. A pair of beseeching hands and two female legs (right) waving in the air add to the turmoil, which is accentuated by the writhing forms of the fish which fall from the fishwoman's basket. The background is formed by the wall of a stone building with two elaborately barred niches, and by the window of a silversmith's shop (right)."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:: "George IV as the 'Great Babe' lies asleep in his cradle rocked by Lady Conyngham, while Wellington, seated before a pier-glass, places the crown on his own head. The glass reflects the dark emaciated features of British Museum Satires No. 15520. The Duke wears a uniform with boots and sword. On a table below the glass the sceptre and orb lie on a cushion. Lady Conyngham, with a towering coiffure as in British Museum Satires No. 15508, croons: Oh slumber my darling | The time may soon come | When thy rest may be broken | By Trumpet & Drum [the last three words in large letters]. The infant sucks a thumb; a gouty foot projects from the coverlet. Abstract:: "Turkish soldiers, scattered over a wide parade-ground, are being instructed in squads, groups, and as individuals, by French officers. In the foreground a Turkish potentate, the Sultan or perhaps the Grand Vizier, leans against the stump of a tree, turning his head in profile to the left to watch the soldiers. At his feet (left) kneels a Black enslaved person who is filling a long pipe; beside him a fire burns on a tiny tripod. On the right a Frenchman pulls the long moustache of a Turk, striking him with his cane. Next, three awkward Turks are being taught musket drill. On the left a Turk threatens an officer, drawing his sabre. In the middle distance a Frenchman puts his hand on the projecting stomach of an obese Turk, to make his attitude more soldierly. In the background are a marching squad (left) and a firing squad (right) and, beyond, an officer is attacked by three Turks with sabres raised to strike. Behind (left) is a Turkish fort. He sits directed to the left in a high-backed arm-chair wearing academic cap and long gown: "There is great weight and Dignity in a gown and Square Cap." A grossly fat and carbuncled parson on a quest for tithes encounters the farmer's wife, who runs towards him proffering an open bandbox, with a dangling lid inscribed 10th. A miniature hussar, very dandified in shako and pelisse, stands in it, superciliously inspecting the parson through an eye-glass. The woman, who is plump and well-dressed, wearing apron and bonnet, says: Seeing your Reverence comeing for your Tithes, I have brought you a Tenth. The parson, who holds a large book, Tithe list, and has a chicken in his capacious pocket, answers with a scowl and gesture of refusal: Take it back! take it back! good Woman; I never tithe Monkeys. Abstract:: A crowd of visitors on the right are shown approaching the military camps at Coxheath indicated on the left with tents and cannon. The crowd, preceded by a barking dog, is chiefly comprised of women, led by a prostitute in pseudo-military garb who is carried on the shoulders of a soldier. Behind her a young woman leads a fat military officer wearing a large wig and carrying his sword in his hand. Following are two elderly women, one with a large muff, the other holding crutches and seated in a wheelbarrow pushed by an old man. Other women and soldiers make up the crowd. In the left foreground are three cannons, inscribed "9 P.", "9 Pounder", and "G.R. 12", the latter being admired by several women

Abstract:: "A raree-show man (right) is exhibiting his peep-show, in a box inscribed "A Vieu of Plymouth", to Lord Amherst, in profile to the right, who stoops down, his hands on his knees, to look through one of the two round holes. The showman says, "There you see Cannons without Carriages and Carriages without Cannons. There you see Generals without Orders there you see &c. &c." The show-box is supported on trestles. Amherst is in general's uniform, wearing the ribbon of the Bath. Abstract:: "Wellington sits behind a small cloth-covered table flanked by eight other representations of himself, as depicted in recent caricatures, apparently all by W. Heath. The arrangement is evidently that of Charles Mathews' 'At Homes', see British Museum Satires No. 14714, &c., Wellington, like Mathews, being in propria persona at the table. In this guise he wears the robes (indistinguishable from Coronation robes) and collar of the Garter and the order of the Golden Fleece and a (crown-like) ducal coronet; his head is turned in profile to the right. Immediately below him, the head and hands of another Wellington, who is crouching on the floor, project from the tablecloth; he grasps a royal crown, and wears a cap coloured blue and resembling a tam-o'-shanter, but perhaps intended for a coronet. The other Wellingtons, all standing (left to right): [1] A mute as in British Museum Satires No. 15501, in profile to the right. [2] A Grenadier, full-face and rigidly at attention, much as in British Museum Satires No. 15768, but without the musket. [3] A ratcatcher stooping to the left and touching his hat, the cage in his left hand (cf. British Museum Satires No. 15806). [4] Aged and cloaked, wearing spectacles, with bowed head, he clasps a cross in both hands. [5] The old woman in a soldier's coat of British Museum Satires No. 15721, facing, and apparently in angry altercation with, the seated Wellington. [6] The coachman of British Museum Satires No. 15731, in profile to the left, holding shaft and lash of his whip as if they were the reins of a four-in-hand which he is driving. [7] Wellington in uniform, directed to the left, wearing his plumed cocked hat and holding up with a furtive expression a sword with a damaged blade in a dilapidated scabbard. [8] A mummy-case with an aperture to show Wellington's head with the forefingers compressing his mouth; below the aperture is the word 'Mum'. Abstract:: "A sequel to British Museum Satires No. 10518, Gillray's 'Tiddy-Doll'. Napoleon, haggard and desperate, wearing tattered uniform without the former apron and sword, walks in profile to the left, carrying on his head a large tray. On this stand three gingerbread kings, burlesqued and mutilated, with two queens, a detached head (crowned), and (right) a pile of imperial emblems: crowns, mitre, sceptre, eagle, flag, &c. On the left a bonnet rouge hangs from a staff. In the middle stands an imperial eagle with a tricolour flag to which is tied a broom showing that the contents of the tray are for sale. Napoleon says (with grimly closed mouth): "Buy my Image! Here's my nice little Gingerbread Emperor & Kings Retail and for Exportation!" Behind him is a tumbledown thatched hovel; over an aperture where more gingerbread figures are displayed is a board: 'Tiddy-Doll Gingerbread Baker. NB Removed from Paris.' Above fly three of the (carrion) birds associated in these prints with Elba. Napoleon walks towards the sea; across the water (in France) tiny figures dance holding hands round a white flag inscribed 'Vivent les Bourbons' and topped by a fleur-de-lis. Behind them is the gable-end of a rustic inn: 'The Kings Head New Revived'. Abstract:: "A young military officer wearing a gorget stands at the door of a house, his left hand on the knocker, looking up at two courtesans who lean out of a sash-window over the door. He puts a coin into the hat of a disabled sailor who stands behind him, supported on crutches, his forehead bandaged. Behind the sailor are two itinerant musicians: a man carrying a rectangular box, and a woman turning the handle of a mechanical organ which is slung round her neck, her mouth is open as if singing. The door of the house is ornamented with a carved wooden pediment, and bears a plate "Mrs Mitchel". The knocker has a lion's head. Only the corner of the house appears, the street is "Cleveland Row". A brick wall extends from the house to the left, over it appear trees, and a notice-board inscribed "Men Traps are laid here: every Night also ...." Abstract:: "Duchess of Kent sits regally on the throne, holding the orb, and turning her head to watch Princess Victoria, who sits (left) on Prince Leopold's knee, holding the sceptre (in the form of a hand of Justice, cf. BM Satires No. 12247) and with the crown half-extinguishing her little head. He wears uniform, sits on a lower seat, but with his right foot on a footstool. He holds out twin cherries to the child, saying, 'Now we'll play at Bob Cherry--open your mouth'. On a table (left) are Sweet Meats and Sugar Candy, on the floor a (mature) doll. On the right, framed by pillars, is the Council Chamber. Wellington presides, in the royal chair, turning arrogantly to say: 'As president of the Council--who shall gainsay me--' [Bathurst was Lord President of the Council]. Behind him Grenadier Guards with fixed bayonets stand at attention. Inconspicuously at his right hand, and below the dais, sits William IV. Abstract:: "Dumouriez, followed by a tall and ragged sansculotte, marches aggressively towards a low barricade (left), behind which are frog-soldiers presenting their bayonets at the invaders. Dumouriez, foppishly dressed in regimentals, but with bare legs, his shirt confined by a sash, holds against his shoulder an enormous seal. He says, holding out his right hand, "Monsr Orange, I will seal up your Papers, & take care of your Cash". From his pocket hangs a scroll: 'New Laws for Holland Prepar'd by the Convention'. Each machine is an appropriate object mounted on two wheels. [1] 'The Aldermans Hobby'. Fat, drink-blotched, and with gouty legs, he rides a turtle. [2] 'The Sailors Hobby'. He vigorously rides an anchor, despite a wooden leg. He has a pugnacious expression, and a long pigtail. [3] 'The Jews Hobby'. He has a beard and rides a bag of 'Old Clothes'. [4] 'The Doctors Hobby'. A very thin apothecary, a medicine-bottle in his pocket, rides a 'Mortar', using the pestle as a steering-rod. [5] 'The Ireishmans Hobby'. Abstract:: "Lord Grantham, in military uniform, wielding the club of Hercules, inscribed 'L G his cane', stands with legs astride, threatening Wooler (left), a tiny 'Black Dwarf, as in British Museum Satires No. 12892, who registers extreme rage or terror. Grantham has enormous moustaches, which fly upwards on each side of his head. A lion's skin hangs from his shoulders, with a solid head which snarls savagely. He wears a bell-shaped shako, long tight trousers strapped under boots, and immense spurs. His left arm, terminating in a huge fist, is extended horizontally. On the left a knock-kneed yokel with bristling moustaches and wearing the cap of a Death's Head hussar, grins in oafish delight, saying, "Well done Col.! well done our side!!! my Zoul! what Honnor this will bring upon our Corpse!!! and if any more Dwarfs or Devils attack's our Regemunt Lord Grant'them all the zame fate, I zay!!" Wooler stands among piles of his paper, 'Black Dwarf', some of which have various inscriptions: 'Strictures on the York Hussars'; 'York you are not wanted'; 'The Devil to Pay'; 'a Lame Story to the Yellow Bonze at Japan'; 'universal Suffrage'; and (adapting 'As You Like It'), 'Then a Soldier, full of Strong Oaths & bearded like the Pard Jealous in Honor Sudden & quick in quarrel seeking the bubble Reputation Ev'n in the printing office'. He wears an ink-pot for hat, with three large pen-feathers; at his waist is a tricolour cockade. On the wall behind him is a framed picture of 'The Yellow Bonze', a grotesque imp, squatting with outspread fingers, and registering surprise. Abstract:: "George IV, dressed as a magician, rises from the throne (right) to give a wooden sword to Canning, who is dressed as Harlequin. A clown (intended for Melville) turns his back on Canning and the King, to run off, registering anger and alarm. Wellington stands fiercely, with legs astride, both arms raised, holding his sword; he wears uniform with boots and cocked hat. On the left Eldon and Westmorland stand together, with flexed knees, registering senile dismay. The latter, dressed as Pantaloon, drops his crutch. The King, in a robe bordered with symbols (serpents, &c), has the curled wig and whiskers which he had discarded (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14637). He chants: Harlequin! the Gods above have now decreed That thou and all thy measures shall succeed. Fear not old El--n, nor that Pantaloon, West----d, the bold Duke, nor the Scotch Clown. Who e'er opposeth thee, thou by love shalt thrive; Thy Genius and my Cunning him shall drive To H--ll's abyss.
