"In a squalid room Johnson and Boswell lie in two short truckle beds. Boswell (right) is in the foreground, his face contorted with horror, his hands before his mouth as if to stifle a scream, his bare feet drawn up, but projecting over the end of his bed. A gigantic spider descends towards his head, insects are spotted over the bedclothes and pillow, from which projects Ogden (see BMSat 7031). Johnson lies on his back (left) under a casement window, his eyes closed, his hands clasped as if in prayer, his knees drawn up to accommodate the shortness of the bed. A woman's dress hangs as an improvised curtain between the two beds. Under Johnson's bed two rats gnaw Boswell's wig."--British Museum online catalogue

Nightmare
Description:
Later state with scratched letters, including the title, a quotation from Ermasus Darwin's 'Botanical Garden' "on his Night-Mare, thro the evening fog, Flits the squab fiend o'er fen, and lake, and bog, Seeks some love-wilder'd maid, by sleep opprest, Alights, and grinning, sits upon her breast", and 'Painted by H.Fusely. Engraved by T. Burke. London Publish'd Jany. 30th 1783 by J.R.Smith, No.83 Oxford Street'. From the impression in the British Museum.
A man looks up in horror at the image of a demon, smoking a pipe and holding a lantern, sitting astride his sleeping wife beside him in their truckle bed. A horse looks on, his head poking through the casement window. Beside their bed is a candle, chamber pot, and a chair on which he has thrown his coat. Probably deriving (remotely) from Fuseli's 'Nightmare'.

A big frog points a spear on which three small frogs are spitted. On his bedside table besides candle, box of 'Dixon's Pills', basin, &c, is a bill of fare: 'Turtle & fresh Cod'; 'Roast beef & à la mode'; 'Veal and Mutton'; 'Pork and Venison'; 'Pheasants & Pigeons'; 'Lobster & Sturgeon'; 'Turkey and Capon'; 'Goose and Salmon'; 'Turbot & Ducks'; 'Shrimps in Pots'; 'Frogs à la Crapodine'; 'Anguille &c à la diabletine' [sic].
