The rider in the centre on a clumsy horse wears a clerical wig, broad-brimmed hat, and gaiters. On the right, and riding in profile to the right, is a man on a stout cob, wearing boots and a bob-wig. Behind him is a fat old woman with outstretched arms shouting in alarm. On the left, riding in profile to the left, is a thin man riding a more spirited horse, and dressed like a layman. Behind him walks a fat divine wearing an academic cap, bands, and a long gown. The fishwives stalls are in the foreground with the masts of ship vessels behind, and among them one tall smoking funnel. The market buildings are on the right. The foreground is more crowded than in other Billingsgate prints. The chief feature is an irate woman seated on an upturned tub beside her stall, berating a lady in a riding-habit who holds a huge fish's head. Beside the latter is another lady, disconcerted. Two liveried servants are amond the crowd. Lady Caroline Lamb and a young marchioness, both 'in disguise', go to the market to hear the traditional language of the fishwives, this Lady Caroline provokes by disparaging a fish. On the left is a fashionably dressed young man, resembling R.C. On the left, a drunken woman sits with her glass raised. From British Museum catalogue

"The Duc d'Orleans (left) chases the Prince of Wales with a whip. Both wear riding-dress with top-boots. Behind them is a pond from which emerge the legs of a man who is submerged from the waist. They are on a path leading to a pavilion (right), the door of which is inscribed 'The Coffee Room'. Men stand at the door watching the scene, others look from a balcony. Behind Orleans, on the extreme left, are the profile and arms of a Frenchman, who says, "ah ha de French Man make de English run". The fishwives stalls are in the foreground with the masts of ship vessels behind, and among them one tall smoking funnel. The market buildings are on the right. The foreground is more crowded than in other Billingsgate prints. The chief feature is an irate woman seated on an upturned tub beside her stall, berating a lady in a riding-habit who holds a huge fish's head. Beside the latter is another lady, disconcerted. Two liveried servants are among the crowd. Lady Caroline Lamb and a young marchioness, both 'in disguise', go to the market to hear the traditional language of the fishwives, this Lady Caroline provokes by disparaging a fish. "Fox and Burke (half length) seen through the barred window of a brick building in which they are imprisoned. They are Hudibras and his squire as in British Museum Satires No. 6361, but in a prison instead of in the stocks. Above the barred aperture is inscribed 'Bailiffs for Middlesex' showing that it is a sponging-house for debtors (cf. British Museum Satires No. 6483, &c). Outside stands the Duchess of Devonshire looking at them over her right shoulder. She wears a hat with a 'Fox' favour, trimmed with feathers and fox's tails as in the canvassing caricatures, but wears a plain riding-dress of masculine cut [Cf. 'Her Grace sometimes rides about in a black riding habit, which is very convenient in case she should be obliged to enter into contact with a Chimneysweeper'. A newspaper paragraph quoted in 'Westminster Election', p. 246.] instead of the usual voluminous petticoats. Her left hand rests on a tasselled cane. She is Hudibras's Lady who visited the pair in prison and released them; her words are etched beneath the design: 'O heavens! quoth she, can this be true? I do begin to fear 'tis you: Not by your individual whiskers, But by your dialect and discourse. That never spoke to man or beast In notions vulgarly exprest: But what malignant star alas! Has brought you both to this sad pass? Hudibras, canto I mo.' [i.e. Part II, canto 1]. On the brick wall of the prison bills are posted: 'Several Pouting lips to be hired by the day by Deven'; [ One of the advertisements for Hood and Wray ran: 'To be hired for the day, several pair of ruby pouting lips, of the first quality, [etc. etc.].'
