Rubrics stop on f. 22v. Part II: Crude headpiece (in imitation of that on f. 7r?) occurs on f. 100r. Large painted initials, in red, with vine-leaf appendages, mark sections of the text. Part III: Delicate floral headpiece on f. 138r: each flower is outlined in red and painted with pale grey and red washes; details added in black. More modest headpiece in similar style, but painted with yellow, occurs on f. 148v; intricate initials in same colors on ff. 138v and 148v. Part IV: Simple woven headpieces, in red, on ff. 266r and 269r. Initials with floral motifs accompany rubricated titles for each sermon; decoration is incomplete (stops on f. 320r). Part V: One initial, in black, occurs at the beginning of the text (f. 330r). Binding stays from this and other parchment manuscripts, s. xiii-xiv, inserted throughout., Binding: Fifteenth century, Germany. The backs of the quires are cut in. Original sewing on three double supports is laced into almost flush wooden boards, and the tawed skin cores of braided endbands, sewn through the cover, are also laced. The spine is back cornered with lining extending between supports on the outside of the boards. Large vermilion and sepia roses are painted on each edge. Back pastedown (and perhaps the inner front pastedown, covered by paper) consists of a parchment bifolium (Germany, 1200-1250) containing the Sermones de tempore of Johannes Halgrinus de Abbatisvilla. Written in small neat early gothic bookhand, above top line. Binding stays from this and other parchment manuscripts, 13th-14th centuries. Covered in kermes pink skin blind-tooled with an X in a frame on the front board, tying-up marks on the spine, and a frame on the lower one. Five round, brass bosses on each board and one fastening, the catch inset on the upper board, the lower one cut in for the strap., Crude red initials, 3- to 2-line, throughout; ff. 33v-38r, 113v-114v and 166r-203r rubricated., Imperfect: leaves 123r-124r and 207r-v mutilated., Purchased in 1946 from H. Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 128, 135, 151, 153, 158, 159, and 197, also from the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe., Part I: Decorative initials, 3- to 2-line, in black, with simple pen designs and small "pearls" on the thin parts of the letters, on irregular grounds of pale yellow wash. Initial strokes and plain line-fillers in pale yellow (initial strokes in red on f. 9r presumably added by the rubricator of ff. 1-8). A series of red dots (also a later addition?) outline the ground of initial on f. 18v. Explicit on f. 80r brushed with yellow wash. Part II: Plain monochrome initials, 3- to 2-line, in red or blue.
