Abstract:
"Scene in the kitchen of a large London house, area railings being just visible through a high barred window (left). A grossly fat doctor, his cane under his arm, grasps with both hands the hand of a French chef (left), who says: "Ah Mister Docteur! how you do Sare! you see I make de friqasee de ragoo, and de Kickshaw!!!" The doctor: "Yes my good friend I see you are hard at it, and I never can quit the house of my rich patients without shaking hands with the cook. I owe you much, for you confer great favours on me, your skill in kickshaws and the ingenious art of poisoning enables us medical Men to ride in our carriages, without your assistance we should all go on foot and be stared [sic]!!-" A fat cook (right) with a rolling-pin says to a kitchen-maid who holds a spitted sucking-pig: "I say Bet let's kick him for a fee." There is a wide fireplace with a large pot on the flames, and a huge joint of beef on a spit protected by a screen. The child Moses is being delivered up by his mother Jochebed (who has been acting as wet nurse) to Thermuthis, the daughter of Pharaoh (Exodus, ii.10; after the painting in the Foundling Museum); to right, the mother/nurse is handed coins by a steward as her son clings to her and looks at his adoptive mother warily; to the left, two female attendants, one a Nubian enslaved woman whispers the secret of Moses identity to her colleague. The scene is identified as being in Egypt by a small crocodile and an Egyptian figure with a snake wrapped around its torso beneath the throne; in the left corner an incense burner. In the background are pyramids and a sphinx

"An untidy shock-headed footman stands letting a tureen slide on to the table so that its contents pour out; in his Ieft hand is a dish containing a leg of mutton, held so that joint and gravy fall to the floor. He stands between a hideous old woman at the head of the table (right) and a comely young one on her right. A fat maidservant follows the footman, holding a dish. Behind the man hangs an elaborately framed bust portrait of a grim-looking man wearing an early eighteenth-century wig. A cockatoo screams from a cage (left). A dog sits behind the old woman's chair, a cat puts its fore-paws on the table to lap the spilt soup. Below the title: 'Take off the largest dishes, and set them on with one hand, to shew the ladies your vigour and strength of back, but always do it between two ladies, that if the dish happens to slip, the soup or sauce may fall on their cloaths, and not daub the floor, by this practice, two of our brethren, my worthy friends, got considerable fortunes. . . . When you carry up a dish of meat, dip your fingers in the sauce, or lick it with your tongue, to try whether it be good, and fit for your masters table - .' The mask and mirror in the lower left corner and the paintings of scenes from the Old Testament (Jonah IV.8 and 2 Samuel VI.1-5) hanging on the wall further amplify the artist's moral message

The second print in the series "Four Times of the Day" is set outside St Giles's-in-the-Fields. On the right an elegant crowd leaves the French Huguenot church; they are dressed in the height of French fashion. Two women kiss on the far right in the customary French way. They are contrasted with Londoners on the left. The two groups are separated by a gutter down the middle of the road; a dead cat lies in the gutter foreground. The Londoners stand outside a tavern with the sign of the Good Woman (one without a head); a woman and man in the second-story window look surprised as the contents of her bowl are tossed out the window. In the foreground, left, under a sign with John the Baptist's head on a platter and reading "Good Eating", a black man embraces a servant girl and a small boy (evidently intended by his curly red hair to be identified as one of the Irish inhabitants of the area) cries because he has broken a pie-dish. A little girl squats as she eats the fallen pie off the ground. The clock in the steeple in the background reads 12:30.

In front of the tavern is a fire where two couples embrace as two women warm themselves, the one reaching out to beg of the well-dressed woman; two large baskets with vegetables sit behind the women, with carrots and mushrooms in the left foreground. To the left, in the middle distance, a small crowd, including two small boys with school bags on their backs, surrounds a man holding a placard advertising a remedy known as Dr. Rock's.
