"An elderly couple in a gig which backs on to the pavement of a country town, against the bow-window of a 'China Warehouse'. Under the wheels are large earthenware vessels which stood outside the shop. A furious couple come out of the shop-door, above which is a board: 'Bob. Brittle china Glass and Earthenware Shop. A savage dog leaps barking at the terrified horse, the fat woman in the gig screams, the man shouts at the horse. A detached house has a sign: 'Probe Surgeon'. Next it is a church. Abstract:
"A group of men standing outside an inn with the sign of the 'Bugle horn'. One, wearing a broad-brimmed hat, holds in his left hand a paper inscribed 'Courier / Dispatch [?]... / Stocks'. His right forefinger is extended as if laying down the law to his companions. On his right stands a man holding his chin with an expression of deep thought. Next to him (left) is an artisan, listening intently, his breeches unfastened at the knee, his stockings ungartered; he holds a short hammer and is probably a shoemaker. Behind (right) a man wearing a waistcoat over a ruffled shirt, but no coat, lounges against the stump of a tree and listens open-mouthed. Abstract:
In the street outside the Thavies Inn, Holborn, the coach driver Tom Nero beats the horse that has collapsed under the weight of the overturned coach, having been overloaded with four lawyers who try to scramble out the door. To the right in the foreground, another man beats a sheep to death. Behind him in the mid-distance a sleeping drayman runs over a small boy with his cart loaded with barrels. To the left a driver uses a pitchfork to prod a donkey burdened with two men, a barrel, and a large trunk on its back. In the distance, a crowd of men follow a bull being baited by a dog. On the side of the building on the left, broadsides advertise a cock-fight and a boxing bout between James Field and George Taylor at Broughton's Amphitheatre

"Prince Leopold (right), in uniform, puts his head through a glassless aperture in a window in the door of his 'Grecian Establish[ment]--Co[burg]', to look intently at a fat Turk who stands in profile to the right, elaborately dressed and holding a long pipe with smoking bowl. The door, partly cut off by the right margin, is flanked by a Corinthian pillar and set in a wall on which are placards: 'This . Shop!!! will shortly open under entire new Management--Vivant [sic] Rex'; a Union Jack poster (partly covered); the Russian eagle, and a fleur-de-lis, the two last inscribed 'Loan'. The Turk: 'What have you taken the Shop? well if you take my advice you will not give Your Customers too much Credit for I can tell you they are a queer set to deal with by the bye they nearly ruined me--and mind that you look sharp after your Shopmen'."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:
"Long, dressed as a funeral mute or mourner, stands full-face, legs apart, carrying four large boards like a sandwich-man (then "board-man"). Only his draped hat and eyes appear above the central board. In his hand is a staff draped in black which is inscribed 'Killing No Murder' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 11371]. At his feet are many ducks, all angrily quacking: 'quack!!'; 'quack!!!'; or (one) 'cruel quack'. He says, quoting a nursery rhyme, 'Come, Dilly, Dilly, Dilly, come and be killed!!!' The principal board is headed 'To the Public', with the Royal Arms. Inscriptions: 'A Receipt of my Grandmothers | Decline Arrested | Consumption prevented | A Cure for all diseases | By The Simple | process of | Skinning Alive | protected by the | NOBILITY | and a House-Full of | Ladies | of the first Distinction | Dr Needy, Harley-Street | NO QUACKERY'. On both flanking boards are a grinning skull and cross-bones inscribed 'momento [sic] mori'; on one (left) are wine-glasses, tankard, and bottle and 'A Short Life and a Merry one'; (right) 'N.B. . Short Accounts make LONG Friends'. Behind is a funeral procession with two coffins, preceded by a duck. This passes the railings of a London square.
