The profile head of the dentist is close to the fat face of his patient, a woman with a wide smiling mouth, open to show two rows of artificial teeth and gums. He smiles, displaying his own artificial teeth, and holds his patient by the chin. Facing him (right) is a man's head in profile, staring up at the woman through a double lorgnette; his open mouth reveals sparse and irregular teeth, in a grotesque jaw. Above his head is a notice: 'Mineral Teeth Monsier De Charmant from Paris engages to affix from one tooth to a whole set without pain. At his feet are many ducks, all angrily quacking: 'quack!!'; 'quack!!!'; or (one) 'cruel quack'. He says, quoting a nursery rhyme, 'Come, Dilly, Dilly, Dilly, come and be killed!!!' Behind the group, from a pigsty attached to the house on the left and inscribed, 'She is as drunk as David's sow' a pig sticks out its head. From the roof of the same house is suspended a sighboard showing two cats and decorated at top with bull's horns. "Alderman Wood, as a zany at a fair, stands on a platform outside a booth addressing a crowd of spectators, half length figures in the foreground forming the base of the design. He points with his right thumb to the Queen (left), who is ready to perform, dressed much as in British Museum Satires No. 14103 but more grotesquely. On the right are Brougham and Denman, as beefeaters, with the letters 'C R' on the breast, but with legal wig and bands; each has a trumpet; that of Denman, who blows it, has a banner 'Solicit you in General'. Wood has ass's ears, wears a fool's cap and red and yellow gown (see British Museum Satires No. 14122) over his suit, with big jack-boots. Under his arm is a bulky rolled document; he holds out a placard: 'Signora Diable Humbuggina now exhibiting with most astonishing Effect.' His words are etched on a big tricolour placard above his head: 'Now then Ladies and Gemmen, here ye has Signora Diable Humbuggina, the most wonderfullest conjuress that ever vas seed at home or abroad. The most perfect Amphibrous Nondescript Hannimal that was ever seed before or behind. She has exhibited her Genus to all the crowned Potentaties, and all the principalest Men in all Europe including the Day of Alljeers [Tunis, see British Museum Satires No. 12810] von o' the best Judges in this here Universe. Hownam, a creature with the head of Bergami, and an ape with the head of Wood as in British Museum Satires No. 14131. Visitors crowd towards it. Before it is a woman in a swing. On the right are two tents, one inscribed 'Good Strong Caroline Brandy', the other flying a tricolour flag inscribed 'Ale and strong liquors'. In the centre foreground stands John Bull, pointing up at the Queen, and addressing the gaping and amused spectators around him. "A design in two compartments, each based on one of the familiar 'Cries of London': In 'Le--Gagne--Petit' (left) Fox is a knife-grinder busily sharpening a headsman's axe. Arranged along his barrow are four knives of various shapes inscribed respectively 'Enquiry', 'inversion', 'sarcasm' (with a notched blade), 'incrementum'. A horn attached to the barrow is inscribed 'Fluidity', a box 'Collective Ideas'. In the background (left) is the gateway of St. James's Palace with two sentries. Behind Fox (right) is the house at the SW. corner of 'St James's St'. He wears a cap and a waistcoat showing a ragged shirtsleeve. Beneath the design is engraved: 'To be Sirs Ingenious I'll tell you my Mind 'tis for What I can get Makes me Willing to Grind.' [2] 'Poisson-Salé'. Burke walks (left to right) along Pall Mall carrying bundles of stock-fish on a pole across his shoulder; he bends forward supporting himself with a stout stick. His only garment, except hat and short wig showing his own hair, is a coat worn back to front, his legs being bare. On a wall behind him (left) are two play-bills: 'Much-Ado about Nothing Principle Performer Mr B------e with The Fathless Irishman', and 'Impeachment of Warren Hastings a Farce, as performed by the Tools of Faction St Stephens Chaple'. Abstract:
In the streets of the slum Ruins of St. Giles, Westminster, the only business are S. Gripe pawnbroker (left), Kilman Distiller (right) and the undertaker (background right). It is a scene of urban desolation with gin-crazed Londoners -- charity children, mothers and babies, trades people, cripples, etc. -- shown dead or dying, fighting, or stupefied with drink. Notably in the foreground a syphilitic mother sitting on the steps lets her child fall to its death over the railing, towards a flagon labeled "Gin Royal", as she takes a pinch of snuff; below her in the steps, an emaciated, bare-chested ballad-seller sleeps with a glass in one hand and a basket and a jug in the other; the ballad hanging from the basket is entitled 'The downfall of Mdm Gin". His dog looks down at the empty glass. On the right in a crumbling building a barber is shown hanging by his neck; below a crowd is being pushed back towards Kilman Distiller. They sit with two attractive young women around a table on which sits a large pie, a tankard, and a broadsheet with the verses of "Rule Britannia." In the lower left a soldier leans against a drum as he plays his flute; the music sheet in front of him is "God save Great George our King". To the right, a short well-fed man smiles as he stands on tip-toe to reach the height required by the recruiting sergeant. "Satirical riposte to Hogarth's 'The Times Plate 1' (Paulson 211) contrasting particular elements of that print to suggest that Lord Bute is creating faction within the country while Pitt and his supporters attempt to calm the situation. St James's Palace is ablaze; flames issuing from the gate set fire to an inn sign of the globe lettered "New Lost Land" (a reference to the recent loss of Newfoundland). On the left, Bute, wearing a tartan night shirt, holding a large pair of bellows, runs away from the fire but encourages it by breaking wind; two other Scots, crouching, also break wind, one of them addressing the other as "Brother Small Wit" (i.e., Tobias Smollett); Henry Fox runs away from Bute's supporters crying, "D[am]n the Dogs how they stink I'll turn my tail on them". On the right, Pitt stands on a fire engine directing a jet of water on the fire (in contrast to Hogarth's print where he stands on stilts fanning the flames while a supporter of the king is the chief fire fighter); the pump is manned by the Dukes of Newcastle and Cumberland and sailors who parallel the prominent sailor in Hogarth's print. Cumberland complains that the "machine is sadly out of Order" (meaning government) to which Newcastle responds "Yes ever since you left it", referring to Cumberland's resignation from military command. The sailors allude to Pitt's letter of October 1761 to William Beckford in which he explains his resignation "in order not to remain responsible for measures which I was no longer allowed to guide" (published in the Annual Register, 1761, p.300); they compare Pitt as the "Master [who] Guides it well" with Bute whose action is a wind that "encreases the Flame" and "comes from a very foul quarter". Charles Churchill, in clerical dress, walks towards the Pitt's group carrying a bucket labelled "North Briton" and offering to "help without hope of a Pension", an allusion to payments made by the Crown both to Hogarth and to Pitt. In the background, to left, a group of men look on saying the "Squire" (the king) and his family are "safe on the other side" (implying they have joined the opponents of Lord Bute, which was not in fact the case); one man continues to encourage Bute, "Blow away my Lad they will expend all their Water soon". They stand on the sign of the (French) crown which has already been cut down. They are assisted by Tom Paine who sits astride the horizontal bar to saw it through, but leaves his saw in the wood to stare in terror at a large bill, posted on the house from which the sign projects, and inscribed: 'Association for preserving Liberty & Property against Republicans and Levellers Resolved. . . '. He exclaims, "Here's a Stop to my Levelling." He is dressed in a slovenly manner and from his pocket protrude 'D Priestley Sermon' (see British Museum Satires No. 7887, &c.) and 'Rights of Man' (see British Museum Satires Nos. 7867, 8137, &c). "The cattle-pens (right) of Smithfield Market are filled with cattle with the faces of peers and draped with ermine-trimmed robes. [The ermine is apparent only in the coloured impression] Thurlow, dressed as a farmer, the owner of the cattle, stands on guard with his back to the pens; he wears his Chancellor's wig and uses the mace as a walking-stick. He clutches a full purse in his right hand and looks fiercely at a smaller number of cattle who are being driven from the left towards the pens. One of these, with the head of Lord Derby, stands on his hind legs, saying, "I move an adjournment till after the next Newmarket Meeting". The cattle in the pens (right) have the heads of peers who were believed favourable to Hastings. In the front row are (left to right) Lord Sydney, the Duke of Grafton, and (between two unidentified peers) Lord Bathurst. An ox with the head of Lord Lansdowne, his horns tipped to prevent mischief, stands (right) outside the pen which he tries to enter, his eyes slyly fixed on Thurlow (cf. BMSat 7311). Others cannot be identified. The Opposition peers include the Duke of Portland (who glares fiercely at Sydney), the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Carlisle, and Lord Stormont. They are being driven by a fierce-looking drover (left); a dog wearing a peer's robe, his collar inscribed 'Mountford', barks at them. On the extreme left Hastings, dressed as a butcher but wearing a turban, riding (right to left) a miserable horse fit only for the knacker (the horse of Hanover), carries off a calf with the profile of George III, its forelegs tied together. He whips his horse ferociously. Behind him is a pawnbroker's shop-window, with three balls and the sign 'Money Lent'. In the middle of the cattle-pens (right) is a bell (that of the Market) on a post, a man (? George Rose) wearing a bag-wig pulls the bell-rope, looking round with a cynical smile. Undifferentiated ministerial cattle at the back of the pens push with their horns at a watchman's box which they are overturning. Three men dressed as watchmen, seated on the roof (which they have climbed to escape the cattle), drop staff, lantern, and rattle and are about to fall off; they are Fox, Burke, and Sheridan. The background is formed by buildings; the pawnshop (left) adjoins a large inn behind the cattle, a house at the corner of 'Smithfield' and 'Cow Lane', which diverges on the right. It is the sign of the Crown; in a balcony over the large gateway which leads to the courtyard sit Dundas (left) and Pitt (right), much at their ease, facing each other in profile, regardless of the turmoil below. They are smoking and have foaming tankards marked with a crown; Dundas is in Highland dress, Pitt is dressed as an English farmer or drover. On the balcony is: 'Good Entertainment for Man and Beast'. Beneath the design is etched: '"Every Man has his Price", Sir Rt Walpole', and '"Sic itur ad astra"'."--British Museum online catalogue

"Five horses with human heads, ridden by jockeys, race for the half-open door of the Treasury (left), across a wide cobbled pavement. The Regent and Lady Hertford with Lord Hertford standing behind holding his Lord Chamberlain's wand, stand on the pavement (left) watching the finish. The winning horse, Liverpool, is a piebald, with an earl's coronet round his neck, and branded 'H'. Next is Wellesley, a marquis's coronet round his neck, ridden by a jockey in oriental dress with a jewelled turban, who looks over his shoulder, saying: "Come Grey push on you'll let Pye Ball win else." Next is Moira, a blue ribbon round his neck representing the Garter granted on 12 June (which he had refused on 28 Feb., see 'Corr. of George IV', i. 29, 34-5), close behind is Grey; last is Grenville. Lady Hertford, as umpire, exclaims: "Bravo Pye Ball you have fairly won." Lord Hertford cries: "Huzza Pye Ball for ever." The Regent turns to a stout John Bull, to say: "Come Johny out with your Cash your favorite has lost you see." John puts out a protesting hand, saying, "No No D--e if I do! I'm off, why its a proper cross and Jostle I d'ont like the Umpire neither." John wears a top-hat and top-boots, his pockets bulge with money-bags, and he holds a cudgel. In the roadway is a cob or pony with the face of Sheridan, branded 'P R', ridden by the stout Yarmouth, from whose pocket projects a paper: 'The Milling Hero a Poem', see No. 11746, &c.; he is too large for his mount, and says: "Softly! Softly! poor Old Sherry, Oh my poor bones are in danger!" The animal kicks, saying: "It's a d--d dirty Job to carry such a -- but as I carried your Master [the Regent] through before you hold fast and I'll take you to the end." In the foreground (right) a man stands full-face, shouting; he holds a tall pole on which is a placard: 'The Treasury Sweepstakes for high-bred Hunters 4 Heats The M-ch-ss of H--s Pyebald Colt Liverpool ------- 1, dr, dr, 1 Iohn Bulls favorite ch. f. Beside this notice are betting men. Three say: "How pye Ball dashes in, he has jockey'd them there he goes!"; "Da--me Johny seems in a Passion"; "Aye he 's [word scored through] Humbugg'd! The other spectators: Why the knowing ones are taken in"; "dish'd by Jupiter" [the Prince], and, "I rather think they are dish'd by Juno, she seems to be umpire."
