Abstract:
"See BM Satires No. 16435. A pretty girl, perhaps the subject of BM Satires No. 16435, lies in a bed drawn close to a fire, indicated by corner of chimney-piece, fender, and guard (left). She is framed in drawn-back curtains, lit by firelight, and is wrapped in a tufted white counterpane from under which one swathed foot extends towards the fire. Her face is framed in nightcap and curl-papers. A cupid-candlestick supports an extinguished candle."--British Museum online catalogue

A man and woman in their pajamas and slippers stand looking in fright at the closed door of their bedroom. He wears a night cap and stands with a weapon in each hand, pointed at the door; his figure casts a large shadow on the back wall and over the bureau on which sits his tricorne hat. His wife (right) clings to his nightshirt, as she holds up a candlestick to light their way. She has her hair tied up in a scarf. To the right, their infant cries in its basket under which sits a overflowing chamber pot. On the other side of the closed door is a small mouse

Title etched below image., Series title and number from caption above image., Printmaker's name etched in image, on left baseboard., Plate 14 in this series is dated 1817 in the British Museum online catalogue., Sheet dimensions from British Museum catalogue., "The series 'Musée Grotesque' consists of at least 65 plates, made over a long period between March 1814 and August 1829. They seem all to have been designed, and in some cases etched, by Godissart de Cari, and all are placed under his name in the British Museum. On his right only are banisters, on his left the steps abut on a gulf indicated by the top of an arch supporting the stair; he is about to descend the first step, perilously near the left edge. "The Prince of Wales stands full-face, in shirt and nightcap, his back to the bridal bed (right) in which the Princess lies with an expression of smiling expectancy. The Prince stands dismayed, with his right fingers to his mouth. On a table beside him (left) are two (?) mustard-pots and a bottle of 'Cantharides'. On the wall showing between the curtains of the bed is a picture of Leda and the swan. The bed is ornate with fringed curtains, and the Prince of Wales' feathers and motto at the head.
