Abstract:: "A satire on prostitution set in a brothel in which all the men have been given the heads of apes and the women those of cats. In the centre of the room a prostitute sits on the knee of an old man who fondles her, her legs splayed; she holds a glass in one hand and a flask in the other. A magistrate wearing a lace edged hat and holding a large candle stands over them. Constables with staves stand in the open door, behind which the prostitute's pimp (referred to as her bully in the verse beneath) is hiding; he is dressed as a grenadier. On the right, the brothel-keeper holds up a tally-board pointing out one of the symbols to three men who are startled at the entry of the constables; one is seated at a table holding a glass, another holds a large candle. On the table is a large flask, another rests on the floor beside a big jug, and another lies broken in pieces. In the background on the right a couple peer from being the curtains of a large bed. See no. 1860 in the Catalogue of prints and drawings in the British Museum, v. 2., Terminal date of publication based on publisher's street address; according to the British Museum online catalogue, Sayer moved from his "opposite Fetter Lane, Fleet Street" premises in 1760. Item no. 257. With a pencilled note: A rare print seldom met with. Obtained in London thru John Taylor -- ER NY. The original watercolor of this print is included in my collection -- obtained thru Amer. Art at auction, originally in the collection of David Insull., and Attached beneath are collector Joel Spitz's comments on provenance from old mount in pencil.

They are lit by the lantern hanging in a watchman's box; the aged watchman sleeps, leaning his arms on the half-door. Behind, in shadow, are the houses. Abstract:: "A fat elderly woman walks (left to right) over rough cobbles, in the teeth of a strong wind against a deluge of rain; her contour is global and fills the greater part of the design. She holds a lighted lantern and clutches a bottle of cordial and a bundle. She wears a hooded cloak, a flat straw hat over a white cap, and pattens. Near her (right) runs a shivering little chimney-sweep, bare-legged, and carrying his tools and soot-bag; he is shouting or 'crying the streets' for custom. Behind her (left) is an aged watchman, leaning with folded arms on the front of his watch-box, asleep. Abstract:: "Fox, dressed as a watchman, stands full-face, his right hand grasping his staff (inscribed 'Uprightness'), his left on his hip. Over his head is the word 'Liberty'; his lantern stands on the ground beside him sending forth rays inscribed 'Truth'. His dog (left) is 'Vigilance'. Zigzag flashes of lightning among clouds, inscribed 'Ministerial Thunderbolts', threaten him from all sides. In the background (right) two sham watchmen are running off to the right holding staves and dark lanterns, which contrast with that of Fox, which sheds its rays in all directions. The foremost is Sir Cecil Wray in military uniform, saying, "For Chelsea Ho a"; the other wearing a hooded cloak over his naval uniform is Lord Hood saying, "For Greenwich Ho a".
