Abstract:: "Fox, dressed as a watchman, stands full-face, his right hand grasping his staff (inscribed 'Uprightness'), his left on his hip. Over his head is the word 'Liberty'; his lantern stands on the ground beside him sending forth rays inscribed 'Truth'. His dog (left) is 'Vigilance'. Zigzag flashes of lightning among clouds, inscribed 'Ministerial Thunderbolts', threaten him from all sides. In the background (right) two sham watchmen are running off to the right holding staves and dark lanterns, which contrast with that of Fox, which sheds its rays in all directions. The foremost is Sir Cecil Wray in military uniform, saying, "For Chelsea Ho a"; the other wearing a hooded cloak over his naval uniform is Lord Hood saying, "For Greenwich Ho a". Abstract:: "A young woman stands within a compass inscribed 'Fear God', holding an open book inscribed 'The Pleasures of Imagination Realized'. At her feet is an open chest full of guineas from which hang bank-notes and jewels; it is inscribed 'The Reward of Virtue'. A small dog stands beside her. In the background (right) is a country house, on the left farm-buildings and haystacks. The four corners are filled ... with the disasters which beset the woman who does not 'keep within compass'. (1) A woman weeps dejectedly with cards and an empty purse on the ground at her feet. (2) A drunken woman lets an infant fall from her arms; on the wall is a torn print inscribed 'Domestic Happiness'. (3) A woman is being conducted to the watch-house by two watchmen, one with his lantern, the other with a rattle. Abstract:: "Lord Eldon, dressed as a watchman, but with his own shoes and stockings, stands in profile to the right, stooping forward. In his right hand is a bludgeon, in the left he holds out a much-battered lantern, the candle broken and extinguished. His rattle hangs from his shoulders. Above: '"Mary, Sir, they have committed false report--moreover they have spoken unthruths'. Secondarily they are slanders, sixth and lastly, they have belied the Constitution [orig. Abstract:: "Peel kicks a lean old watchman behind, and drags from his shoulders his patched and tattered coat. Just behind him (right) is a big bonfire in which a watch-box and battered lanterns are blazing; beside it lie more lanterns, a rattle, and staves. In the background a watchman hangs by the neck from the branch of a tree, still holding rattle and lantern. Beside the tree is a pond from which projects an arm clutching a rattle. Peel says: '"But such a poor, bare-forked animal as thou art--Off--off you lendings: come unbutton here vide Shaks--' ["Lear", III. iv]. The terrified watchman answers: '"Nay, take my life and all, pardon not that: You take my house, when you do take the prop That doth sustain my house; you take my life, When you do take the means whereby I live, vide Shaks.' Abstract:: A scene in the Abbey Cloisters. Westminster schoolboys in cap and gown terrify a poor woman and a watchman by turnip-headed ghosts, and by one of their number on stilts who is masked and smoking a flaming pipe. Another, seated on a lamp-bracket, discharges a squirt at the frightened woman who falls, clutching at the fleeing watchman. See British Museum catalogue
