Stanhope, Philip, second earl of Chesterfield (1633-1714), courtier and politician, was the eldest son of Henry Stanhope (d. 1634), and his wife Katherine (bap. 1609, d. 1667). He was involved in numerous duels, fleeing the country after having killed Francis Wolley, the son of a Hammersmith doctor, in a duel on 17 January 1660. Chesterfield was appointed on 24 February 1662 as lord chamberlain to Queen Catherine of Braganza, and on 13 June 1667 was made the colonel of a foot regiment, but it was disbanded following the treaty of Breda. That year he married his third wife, Lady Elizabeth Dormer (1653-1677). They had two sons and two daughters, one of whom was Lady Mary Stanhope, for whom the manuscript was written. Marie Anne de Vichy Chamrond, marquise du Deffand (1697-1780), was married at 21 to her kinsman, Jean Baptiste de la Lande, marquis du Deffand. The marriage resulted in a separation as early as 1722. However, her intelligence, cynicism, and wit gained her such friends as Voltaire, Montesquieu, Fontenelle and Madame de Staal-Delaunay, the president Henault, and D'Alembert. The principal friendships of her later years were with the duchesse de Choiseul and with Horace Walpole. ALS from Madame de Sévigné to her daughter soon after she married and moved to Provence. The letter begins by assuring her daughter of a preference for her company over that of Mme. de Brissac and continues with a report on the weaknesses of her brother Charles and his affair with an actress. She responds to an invitation to visit Provence and talks about her other possible travel plans. She reports on an evening spent at the home of Madame de la Fayette, with M. de La Rochefoucauld and the amusement the "Marans woman" caused when she appeared with nothing on her head and a child-like hair cut. She conveys more news about social engagements at the Arsenal and the Luxembourg where there were "men of all ranks". She relates a conversation with Abbe Tetu that she had in the afternoon spent at Mme. Richelieu's home. She thanks her for a gift of gloves and describes material that she has purchased for a dress. She conveys more words of encouragement and affection about her daughter and compliments from mutual friends. A postscript includes a description of the King's visit to Chantilly, his hunting, the fireworks, and the shocking suicide of the well-respected maître d'hôtel, Vatel. She closes with a report on the engagement of M. de Ménars to Mlle. de La Grange Neuville

Manuscript, in a single hand with numerous corrections, of a collection of 15 letters describing life in England, translated into French, possibly from German. The letters discuss English lotteries; the proliferation of newspapers; the constitution and the difficulty of reconciling ideology with practice; Parliamentary elections; literary societies; and the nobility. One letter describes and deplores the cruelty of amusements such as hunting, cock-fighting, and "combats des gladiateurs"; another letter mocks an English law against the illegal wearing of buttons. A letter dated December 14, 1790 discusses the possibility of the abolition of the slave trade; the author declares it is the most talked-of subject of conversation and expresses his astonishment that the trade still exists and The letters are followed by a lengthy essay explaining the Women's March on Versailles on October 5-6, 1789. The volume is prefaced by a note by the translator, who criticizes the motives of many travel writers; says that he was drawn to this letter-writer for his curiosity and interest in humanity; and explains that the writer published two volumes, the first of letters written in Paris and Versailles during the revolution in 1789, and the second of letters in England

Reversed copy of the first print in the Hogarth's series "Four Times of the Day. The setting is a morning in Covent Garden; in the center of the image, a middle-aged woman walks from the right towards St. Paul's church; the clock on the tower showing 6:55. She is followed by a servant boy carrying her prayer book under his arm as he tries to warm his hands in his pocket and jacket. St. Paul's is partially hidden behind a tavern identified by a sign reading "Tom King's Coffee House." There is a fight in the doorway, one man losing his wig as it flies out the door. In front of the tavern is a fire where two couples embrace as two women warm themselves, the one reaching out to beg of the well-dressed woman; two large baskets with vegetables sit behind the women, with carrots and mushrooms in the right foreground. To the right, in the middle distance, a small crowd, including two small boys with school bags on their backs, surrounds a man holding a placard advertising a remedy known as Dr. Rock's.

On the right an elegant crowd leaves the French Huguenot church; they are dressed in the height of French fashion. Two women kiss on the far right in the customary French way. They are contrasted with Londoners on the left. The two groups are separated by a gutter down the middle of the road; a dead cat lies in the gutter foreground. The Londoners stand outside a tavern with the sign of the Good Woman (one without a head); a woman and man in the second-storey window look surprised as the contents of her bowl are tossed out the window. In the foreground, left, under a sign with John the Baptist's head on a platter and reading "Good Eating", a black man embraces a servant girl and a small boy (evidently intended by his curly red hair to be identified as one of the Irish inhabitants of the area) cries because he has broken a pie-dish. Henry Seymour Conway (1719-1795), and his wife, Caroline Bruce, Lady Ailesbury (1721-1803), the daughter of John, fourth duke of Argyll. In 1767 she married John Damer, the son of Lord Milton, later the 1st Earl of Dorchester. They separated after seven years, and he died by suicide in 1776. Her artistic career developed during her widowhood, though the development of her youthful interest in sculpture is credited to her father's secretary, David Hume, and to the encouragement of Horace Walpole, who was her guardian during her parent's frequent trips abroad; in 1789, Walpole introduced Damer to Mary Berry (1763-1852), with whom she developed a passionate and lasting friendship. At his death, Walpole bequeathed her Strawberry Hill as his executor and residuary legatee. Damer exhibited 32 works at the Royal Academy and produced keystone sculptures for the bridge at Henley-on-Thames, a 10-foot statue of Apollo, now destroyed, for the frontage of Drury Lane theatre, and two bas-reliefs for the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery.
