Script: copied by one hand in Gothica Hybrida Libraria.
Headings and stroking of the majuscules in red. 3-line red plain initials. On f. 1r 6-line blue initial with interior reserved shapes and developed purple penwork in the shape of a rose; purple penwork extensions in the left margin.
Binding: original binding: brown calf over wooden boards, sewn on three double cords; both covers blind-tooled with frames of double fillets and a St Andrew's cross, and a few lozenge-shaped tools. Remnants of one brass clasp, attached to the rear board. On the front board a damaged parchment title label with the inscription in Northern Gothica Textualis Formata beginning with a red majuscule: “Vita sanct** Barlaam *********”. On the rear board four brass bosses and, in the center in black ink, the letter D (part of a shelfmark, s. XVII/XVIII?). - Provenance
- On the front pastedown, in s. XV Gothica Hybrida Libraria: “Liber monasterii beate Marie virginis in Hyrczenhayn ordinis Canonicorum Regularium prope Ortenberg Moguntinensis dyocesis” (this inscription is repeated on the rear pastedown). The manuscript belonged to the convent of Hirzenhain, Regular Canons of St Augustine (Land Hessen). On the front pastedown there is also an erased ownership inscription in German, a German inscription s. XVII beginning “Johannes Dopent ...”, and the oval armorial bookplate of Friedrich Freiherr von und zu Franckenstein in Ullstadt. Purchased from Les Enluminures (Chicago, Paris).
