Abstract: A happy looking lad stands center accepting with his left hand the king's shilling from the recruiting serjeant. A pregnant girl weeps on the lad's shoulder while on the left her mother berates the lad. To the right behind the serjeant stands a drummer. The scene takes place in front of a tavern, the signboard of which shows the lower part of two, one-legged men and whose name is 'Fortune of War'. In the window sits a man in a cap smoking a pipe and smiling cynically while another looks around the corner of the door
