- Abstract
-
"A Hyde Park scene. An African family, man, woman, and child, and a similar Lapp family, stand to be gazed at by extravagantly dressed pedestrians. The Lapps have a reindeer decorated with ribbons as in BM Satires 14430, and the child is held on its back by the proud parents. The Africans have distended ear-lobes and projecting under-lips; they wear metal circlets on their heads, set with erect feathers, and feather-trimmed robes. 'Monstrosities' include a very tall cavalry officer with a huge plume in his ornate helmet, and a dwarf in top-boots and fashionable dress. There are also a dandy on horseback with concertina-like trousers, two men in ulsters (one tartan) which trail on the ground, a woman with an enormous bonnet and ermine-trimmed pelisse of grotesque shape. Men's hats are low-crowned and broad-brimmed, or cylindrical, or bell-shaped."--British Museum online catalogue
