Manuscript on paper of Marcus Tullius Cicero, De officiis
- Description
-
In Latin.
The manuscript also includes an anonymous letter, by which the writer presents his father (or a religious person) with a (the present?) manuscript containing Cicero's De officiis, as well as a humanistic oration to a prince, and an anonymous oration.
Script: main text copied by one hand in Gothica Cursiva Libraria.
Binding: s. XX/XXI: undecorated parchment over cardboard. - Provenance
- The colophon has partly been erased and its original wording is not clear. The first owner was Antonius Pistoriensis (of Pistoia) from Conegliano, a place in the Veneto. He sold it on 17 June 1455 to a Bartholomaeus de Doyono. Until the end of the twentieth century the manuscript was the first section of a volume, the second section of which is now MS 890. This volume was sold at auction by Christie's, London, on 3 June 1998, lot 19. After dismembering, the present first section was sold at auction by Sotheby's, London, in 2001, lot 31. Purchased on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund.
