"Whampoa Military Cadets on parade grounds in Canton City previous to parade off Shameen, June 23, which resulted in hostilities in which one Frenchman on Shameen was killed, 53 Chinese students killed, 150 wounded. The Whampoa Military Academy is said to be subsidized by Russia, and the students trained by Russian officers. They helped the Cantonese defeat the Yunnanese in the middle of June."
