Abstract: An abalone shell engraved by an unknown artist in a design featuring two armed soldiers at the left and General Zachary Taylor astride a horse at the right, both flanked by arrangements of American flags. "General Taylor at Matamoros" is engraved along the bottom of the image, and the entire composition was highlighted with black ink.

Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), American army officer who in early 1846 built a fort on the Rio Grande opposite the Mexican town of Matamoros. He led American troops to victory in a series of battles during the Mexican War, culminating in the Battle of Palo Alto on May 8, 1846. Taylor later became the 12th president of the United States, serving from March 1849 until his death in July 1850.
