"Three scenes, one on top of the other; top: a lying-in visit in a bedroom, the mother sitting wrapped in many clothes beside a fireplace at left, the cradle at her feet, the baby held up by a nurse to kiss a female visitor sitting at right with two other women who look on delightedly; middle: a round dance, a fiddler and drummer playing in a box at left, and a man approaching with a punch bowl; below: ship-building on the shore, a man working on an upturned rowing-boat wit ha hammer, another pausing to talk to a mother and child at right, a man sawing a plank of wood at left, children playing in the sand, ships in the water beyond."--British Museum online catalogue
