Intracisternal granules with an electron density equal to that of zymogen granules are found in the RER cisternae of animals fed after starvation or after intense in vitro stimulation with secretagogues. They may reflect the Unfolded Protein Response following rapid synthesis of proteins that outstrips the ability of the quality control system to keep up with folding of proteins for export from the RER.
