William Brown, Corp'l, Co. I, 1st Mass. H.A., aged 34, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen'l Hospital, April 5th, 1865, suffering from gun shot wound of posterior part of lower third of left forearm, injuring ulna. Wounded, March 31st, 1865, at the battle of Petersburgh, Va. Amputation of left forearm, upper third, by a circular incision. Operation performed by Surg. R. B. Bontecou, U.S.V., April 15th, 1865. Condition of injured parts at time of operation very bad, gangrenous and sloughing. Constitutional state of patient very poor. Patient did tolerably well after the operation, till about April 22nd, but from that date he suffered severely from diarrhea, and gradually sank, notwithstanding the free use of astringents, opiates and a general supporting treatment throughout.
