Abstract: The papers, primarily correspondence, deal with the rights of Indians to the land in the reservation under the treaty of 1868 and the agreement of 1882, the influx of settlers under President Arthur's executive order of Feb. 27, 1885, and the rights of settlers dispossessed by President Cleveland's proclamation of April 17, 1885
Description: Bishop William Hobart Hare (1839-1909), known as the "Apostle to the Sioux," was appointed in 1872 Bishop of Niobrara, which was expanded and renamed the Missionary District of South Dakota. Hare continued working in Dakota until his death.
Provenance: The papers formerly belonged to the Right Reverend Nathaniel Seymour Thomas, Bishop of Wyoming. Given to the library by William Robertson Coe.
