"A black man, dressed as a macaroni except for his tightly curled natural wool, walks in profile to the right. His right hand holds a cane, his left is on the hilt of a short curved sword or sabre with an ornamental hilt affected by macaronis."--British Museum online catalogue
"Perhaps a caricature of Jeremiah Dyson, always called Mungo after the name had been given him in a debate by Col. BarreĢ, 29 Jan. 1769. Mungo was a negro slave in the comic opera 'The Padlock' by Bickerstaffe, and the name implied that Dyson was kept at dirty jobs for the Government."--Curator's comments, British Museum online catalogue
