Abstract: "Half length portrait of Samuel Parr (1747-1825) seated full-face behind a table; his right fist rests on a large book, 'Bellen[denus]'; in his left hand is the stem of a long pipe which he smokes, scowling. In the smoke are the words 'Damn τоν δεινα'. Beneath the title is etched: '"Fore tamen optandum est ut ad ultionem potius quam defensionem composita fiat Tabula" Vide Prœf. fo. xxxvii'"--British Museum online catalogue
