The father, sitting in a chair, lights his pipe using the candle on the small table next to him; a pitcher and two mugs are also seen on the table. Behind the father stands his wife, and on the floor beside him sits a young girl. The other man, sitting across the table from the father, is wearing a coat and hat; his left hand is extended, perhaps reaching for his mug
