Depiction of the monument to John Gay in Westminster Abbey; a sculptural bust of Gay, in profile to the right, sits in an oval and rests on a plinth supported by a cherub to the left, who drapes a cloth over the right side of the oval. An obelisk with ornaments is behind, all beneath an arch supported by columns. A memorial by Alexander Pope is inscribed on the plinth, and a dedication from the Duke and Duchess of Queensberry is inscribed at the bottom of the monument

Signed by the artist in lower right corner.
Possibly a design drawing for an engraving with the signatures "H. Gravelot delin." and "J. Scotin sculp." and the publication line "Publish'd Sep. 29, 1738, by J. & P. Knapton & T. Cox". This plate was issued as the frontispiece to: Fables. By the late Mr. Gay. Volume the second. London : Printed for J. and P. Knapton, and T. Cox, 1738.
Mounted after page 214 (leaf numbered '108' in pencil) in volume 3 of an extra-illustrated copy of Joseph Spence's Anecdotes, observations, and characters, of books and men. - Provenance
