Description of a festival held in Messina in August 1589 by order of the future King Philip III of Spain, in celebration of the discovery of relics believed to be of the martyr Placitus and his companions. Here, as commonly occurred from the 12th century on, Placitus is confused with the later St. Placidus (companion of St. Benedict, monk of Subiaco, fl. 6th century).
Engraved t. p., illustrated.
Illustrations: 27 full-page engravings (incl. t. p.; one repeated), chiefly depicting triumphal arches erected for the celebration and funeral biers with tableaux (incidents of St. Placitus' life and martyrdom) borne in the procession. Two plates depicting arches are signed: Rinaldvs Bonanvs inventor.
Errata on p. [7]-[8].
