Autograph manuscript signed, and manuscript signed, double column; consisting of a series of 5 propositions and a postscript, signed by Rochambeau, on the left hand of each page, and autograph manuscript, "Observations by Genl. Washington," in the right hand column of each page, signed at the end. 11 pages, folio. Wethersfield.
Washington here gives his answers to Barras' questions. Rochambeau's Propositions are given in only a brief form in The Writings of George Washington, ed. John C. Fitzpatrick, vol. 22, pp. 105-106. The first four Propositions have to do with planning for the defense of Newport and Providence. The junction of the Armies is the subject of the 5th Proposition, and a preference is indicated for an attack on New York rather than the South. Added to the above is a manuscript, in the hand of a secretary, giving an account of the strength of the American army, and an estimate of the strength of the British in New York. The manuscript is 1 1/2 pages, folio, and undated, but apparently of the period of this conference. - Provenance
