- Abstract
-
Holograph of a tour through Derbyshire, the Lake District, and nearby cities such as Liverpool, Shrewsbury and Worcester by an unidentified young woman in the company of "Mr.Pinchback and dear Eliza." Written in a highly literary style, the journal describes in detail the "fascinating and sublime views" and the author's emotional reactions to them, including Smedley's Cavern, Castleton Peak, Keswick, Ambleside, Coniston, Kendal, Derwent Water, and many other traditional beauties of the Lake District. In Colebrookedale, she viewed the Iron bridge and the "dismal regions" of the ironworks and comments on the harsh working conditions
The author is also interested in artistic interpretations of picturesque sights, even carrying "a small camera, given me many years since by my beloved father." She records the purchase of a print by Pocklington and her pleasure at the exhibition of William Green's "highly finished drawings of the Lakes," and comments frequently on the "captivating effect" of the landscapes she views. Other topics include historic churches, houses and gardens visited; her affection for Eliza; the conditions of roads and inns; and descriptions of meetings with other travelers
