Letters, documents, and receipts relating to Gardner's early surveying career in Oregon, his purchases of land in Black Rock, outside of Buffalo, N.Y., and in the town of Whatcom, Washington Territory. Also, letters and documents relating to the Oregon and Washington Indian War claims filed by his brother Charles. Accompanied by a letter to "Gardner" from the Hon. Alvan Flanders regarding the 20% bill, and a page of a draft of a report on the prairie outside Sumas, Washington by G. Clinton Gardner
- Description
- G. Clinton Gardner worked on the US/Mexico boundary survey from 1849-1854, and then for his father, Charles K. Gardner, Surveyor General of Oregon. He served as Assistant Astronomer and Surveyor to the Commission appointed to establish the Northwest Boundary in 1856. He spent the remainder of his career managing several railroads in the east. His brother Charles T. Gardner was also a surveyor in Oregon, and fought in the Oregon and Washington Indian Wars.
