37 ALS, 23 of them written by Smith to his brother John Curtis Bowen and his sisters Marcia and Lucia Smith, while he attended Middlebury College, Andover Theological Seminary, and Yale Theological Seminary. These letters carry local news and religious meditations. The other letters are from different sources: Mission Board members concerning his placement at a mission, two letters from home while he was in Hawaii, and several letters from family members upon his return. One letter is written on the conjugate leaf of a report entitled "American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Reduction of the Missions" dated June 26, 1837. Also included are three copies of ecclesiastical council minutes pertaining to his career
- Description
- Smith was a missionary in Oregon and Hawaii. He was sent in 1838 to Oregon by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. In 1842 he became a missionary in Hawaii. He returned to the Northeast in 1846, and became a pastor of the Buckland Congregational church.
