Printmaker attribution and date from impression at the Library and Archives Canada (Acc. No. 1938-223-42), on which the contemporary statement of responsibility "by Mrs. Simcoe 1794" is written in ink.
After a drawing by British Lieutenant Governor Henry Hamilton, who travelled with Pacanne during the American Revolution. The original drawing is now housed at the Houghton Library at Harvard.
A slightly later date is suggested by a contemporary ink annotation beneath plate mark on Lewis Walpole Library impression: An Indian Chief N. America of the Miamis tribe (from life 1795).
Presumably one of only two small plates etched by Simcoe, which were sent to England in 1794 and printed in Bristol and London; see Dictionary of Canadian Biography, entry for Elizabeth Posthuma (Simcoe) Gwillim. - Provenance
