This drawing was sent to Horace Walpole by John Fenn in 1774, with Walpole speculating on the identity of the sitter in his response. For a transcription of the letter and a reproduction of the drawing, see Horace Walpole's letter to John Fenn, 17 September 1774 (Yale edition, Horace Walpole's correspondence, v. 16, pages 232-235).
Mounted on page 17 in a volume of ca. 50 drawings that was assembled from works purchased by Horace Walpole at the Vertue sale of 1757. Now bound in red morocco, this volume has Walpole's manuscript title-page: Original drawings of heads, antiquities, monuments, views, &c. by George Vertue and others. - Provenance
