The Yale Collection of American Literature began acquiring Gertrude Stein material through deposits beginning in 1937. In 1947, following Stein's death, Alice B. Toklas sent Yale shipments that included Stein's manuscripts, books, photographs, and personal material. The story of how Gertrude Stein's papers made their way into the Yale Collection of American Literature has been detailed in an essay by Donald Gallup in the Yale Library Gazette (October 1947).
