The guard stands in the middle of the room, coach-horn in hand, imperiously addressing a lady who holds a caged parrot. A man on the left drinks from a bowl. A man with his hat tied on warms his back at the fire. The coachman waits outside the door. Over the fireplace is a framed picture of a mail-coach, and on the chimney-piece a model of a horse (the sign of the famous coaching inn)."--British Museum online catalogue
