"The sovereigns of Europe, &c, watch from their seats in a bull-ring the Spanish bull tossing Napoleon above its head. The point of his sword projects from the ferocious animal's shoulder; he holds his broken sword, dripping blood, and has a badly gashed thigh. His cocked hat and a paper, 'Plan pour Assujettir le Monde' [cf. BMSat 10599, &c.], fall to the ground. A broken collar inscribed 'Corsican Chain' is round the bull's neck, a few links of a heavy chain still attached to it. The bull tramples on and befouls Joseph Bonaparte, who lies on his back, moribund or dead, in his rightoyal robes, the crown falling from his head; under his hand is a torn paper: 'Coronation de Joseph Boanaparte Rex Espagnol-Gibraltar-&c. Nap'. Three bulls, previously disposed of by the Corsican Matador, and horribly gashed, lie on the ground (r.), bellowing. A butcher's ticket is affixed to each: 'Prussian Bull Beef', 'Dutch Bull Beef', 'Danish Bull Beef'. They are [marginal note] "Wounded Bulls bellowing for help-." The barrier, an arc of which frames the arena, is inscribed 'Theatre Royale de I'Europe'. Behind it, and along the upper margin of the design, sit the sovereigns. On the extreme left. is George III, in military uniform, holding a trident (emblem of sea-power), and peering down impassively through his glass; the back of his (coronation) chair is partly visible. Next him is (?) the Emperor of Austria, gripping the edge of the barrier with a gauntleted hand and with the hilt of his sword projecting from his right. hand. Next John, the Regent of Portugal holds up his hat in exultation; he clutches a bottle of 'Vin de Brazil' [see BMSat 10960, &c.]. Next him, the Tsar, his head encircled by the words 'Alexr the Great', bites the corner of a feathered tricorne in his agitation. The King of Prussia grasps a feathered cocked hat, and puts his hand to his mouth. The bellicose King of Sweden wears a fur-trimmed tunic and a fur cap, with a star, inscribed 'Polar Star' [the Swedish order]. Two pistols are thrust through his belt. Next is the Pope, wearing his tiara, and holding up his cross; before him is a paper: 'The Bull for Excommunicating the Corsican Usurper'. "Grenville (r.) displays a dancing bear with the head of Fox enclosed in a muzzle. He holds a chain attached to the muzzle and a long heavy staff: 'Cudgel for Disobedient Bears'. The bear obediently and clumsily repeats the dancing-step of his master; he holds in both paws his bonnet rouge trimmed with tricolour, and tramples upon two torn and discarded songs: 'Caira, Ca . . .' [see BMSat 9735] and 'A Begging we will go' [an allusion to the subscription raised for Fox in 1793 [This is confirmed by Lord Holland.]: see BMSat 8331, &c., and cf. BMSat 9885]. The bear and Grenville face each other in profile; the latter is neatly dressed, wearing top-boots with round hat and bag-wig. In his pocket is a book: 'Rewards for Obedient Bears'. He says: "dont be afraid of my Bear, Ladies & Gentlemen! \ "I have tamed & muzzled tarn, & reformed his Habits." The rest of the troupe is on the left, behind the bear's back. An ape with the head of Lord Henry Petty, and wearing the gown of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, capers in time, clasping the bear's stump of tail, and holding up, with a delighted grin, a fool's cap trimmed with bells. The music is provided by Sidmouth, a ragged fiddler, with a patch over eye. He stands on the pavement, his head in profile to the right., wearing cocked hat, bag-wig, and Windsor uniform, with tattered breeches, and a foot projecting through a remnant of boot. His r. knee rests on a wooden leg or stump. He plays 'God save the King' [as a protégé of George III]; from his the pocket hangs a paper: 'Pray remember your poor and Old Blind-Fiddler'. On the wall behind him are three bills: (1) 'Pro Bono Publico - Superbly fine Exhibition, at the Bear Garden, Broad-bottom'd Alley. - Orpheus Charming the Brutes, with a Grand Accompaniment by Dr Sangrado [Sidmouth]'. "The beam of a pair of scales is suspended from a vertical bar terminating in a ring which encircles one of many solid rays from a large sun (l.) surmounted by the Prince of Wales' coronet and feathers. The 'Rising-Sun' (see BMSat 10258) is partly obscured by dark clouds, but its rays extend across the design and illuminate especially Sidmouth and Ellenborough. The former is poised triumphantly on the cross-beam, depressing the r. scale with his foot, while he holds on his shoulders Ellenborough in judge's wig and gown, who manipulates the scale in the same direction. This lower scale contains the 'Broad-Bottomites' ie the Grenvillites, or New Opposition, the other, the 'No-Bottomites', i.e. the Foxites, or Old Opposition. In the latter (l.) the occupants hold the ropes with expressions of anxiety; the inscription suggests that they lack 'bottom' or endurance (a pugilistic phrase). Fox is the most prominent, between Erskine (l.), in Chancellor's wig and gown and with the Purse of the Great Seal, and Grey (r.). Moira, in cocked hat and regimentals, stands stiffly behind. Fox and Grey have bonnets rouges but do not wear them. The other bowl contains Grenville, one hand on his fat nephew Lord Temple; the heavy posteriors for which the family were noted take up much of the bowl. Windham waves his hat triumphantly. Of two other partly obscured occupants one resembles Lord Henry Petty. The scales are suspended above the curve of the globe on which Great Britain and the Continent are indicated. Behind the North Pole (r.) is a setting sun containing a royal crown; its feeble rays are outshone by the heavy beams of the rising sun (or son). "An allegorical design combined with a quasi-realistic scene on the deck of the 'Victory'. The dying Nelson, in half-reclining position on a cannon, is supported by Britannia and by Captain Hardy, who stanches his wound. A young sailor kneels at his feet, supporting the hand from which Nelson's sword drops; he holds up the folds of the tattered tricolour flag which another sailor, with a gesture of astonishment and grief, has brought to Nelson. The flag (from the French flag-ship, the 'Bucentaure') is inscribed 'Vive l'Emp[ereur des] Francois'. On the deck, beside Nelson, his telescope lies across a paper: 'Bay of Trafalgar'. Britannia, with trident, shield, and a small branch of olive, kneels on the cannon, covering her eyes with her left hand. Poised on a cloud of smoke behind Britannia stands Fame, blowing his trumpet and holding up a pen with which he has just written in large letters on a swirling cloud the word 'Immortality'. The flag of the 'Victory', torn by shot, is on the extreme left; beside it three marines fire their muskets with deadly effect at the men in the mizen-top of the adjacent French ship, the 'Redoubtable' (who were responsible for the fatal shot). "Lord Temple, naked, wtth large feathered wings bound to his upraised arms, attempts to fly after his father, Buckingham, who is soaring upwards. But his wings are disintegrating; feathers, which are quill pens, fall from them, and he is about to descend heavily on to a viciously pointed stake which is planted in the cobbles of the roadway. His wings are splashed with red, i.e. with sealing-wax. The stake is inscribed 'Stake out of Public-Hedge!' Buckingham (as Daedalus), whom distance makes much smaller than his bulky nephew, is borne up on intact, outspread wings inscribed 'Tellership of \ the Exchequer'. His naked posteriors are grotesquely large. Both are lit by broad slanting beams from a sun in the upper right. corner of the design containing the heal of George III looking down with surprised severity at Temple. On the opposite side of the wide roadway is a handsome detached house, representing the Paymaster's house in Whitehall. A negro servant in livery stands at the door handing up a package to a man in a cart inscribed 'Stationary Office', which is piled with similar packages and bundles of pens. "The procession has advanced to the door of a church (r.) which a parson closes, dropping his prayer-book, open at the 'Burial Service'. Only his arms and robe are visible; he says: " - no Burial here, for Broad-Bottom: - he died a Roman; - besides, - 'tis a felo-de-se case; - take him to the next 4 cross-roads; & the Family has a large Stake always ready!" Only the acolyte at the head of the procession has realized this check: little Lord Henry Petty drops his bell and candle and capers in dismay. The three pall-bearers (a fourth is hidden behind the coffin) are (l. to r.) Sidmouth, Lord St. Vincent, and Windham. All wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks, and clutch handkerchiefs, weeping large tears. Below the coffin are seen the robes and bare sandalled feet of monks. On the top of the coffin is Grenville, face downwards, and showing the back of his wig, and a dome- shaped hump denoting his famous 'broad-bottom' (see BMSat 10530). At the four corners are ostrich plumes. On a placard on the side of the pall: 'Gul: Baro: de Broad-Bottom Obiit die Martis 24° A: D. 1807'. Behind the coffin walks the Pope, in his tiara and robes, weeping and supported between the Marquis of Buckingham and his son Lord Temple. Both weep with gestures of extravagant grief; both are dressed as priests. Behind, thin and ascetic, is Howick, a barefooted monk, holding up the Pope's long robes. Behind walk arm-in-arm, both shambling and dissipated, Sheridan clutching a bottle of 'Brandy' and General Fitzpatrick, from whose pocket hangs a paper: 'Tears of Hedge Lane' [a squalid resort of prostitutes in Westminster]. Both wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks. Next, Erskine and Ellenborough walk together; Erskine claps to his eye his beloved and discarded Chancellor's wig. At the end of the procession and on the extreme left. are Lauderdale and Moira wearing his cocked hat with a mourning scarf and cloak. All weep, registering deep distress. "Napoleon and Josephine are in the centre of an elaborate processional design. Individuals and groups are identified by eleven captions in the lower margin. The background is formed of close ranks of French soldiers, with a forest of caps, spears, pikes, and banners receding in perspective. The front row, facing the procession, are grenadiers at attention with bayoneted muskets, the letter 'N' in front of their bearskins. They are in shadow; those behind Napoleon are obscured by dense clouds of smoke from a censer; next them (l.) grenadiers blow trumpets and French horns. The procession is led, as by a drum-major, by the posturing and theatrical figure of 'His Imperial Highness Prince Louis-Buonaparte Marbœuf - High Constable of the Empire' [Marbeuf was his godfather] on the extreme right. He wears tight-fitting archaic dress, with a feathered coronet, a cloak trailing from one shoulder, buskins, and sabre. He carries a tall staff surmounted by a fleur-de-lis. Next come 'The Three Imperial Graces, viz. Thier Imp. Highs Princess Borghese [Pauline], Princess. Louis (cher amie of ye Emperor) & Princess Joseph-Bonaparte' [Hortense and Julie] - three slim young women, very scantily draped, scatter roses. All wear feathered coronets with long snaky curls on their shoulders; they resemble the sisters of Napoleon in BMSat 10072. The ground (l. to r.) is strewn with the flowers they have scattered. Next walks 'Madame Talleyrand (ci devant Mrs Halhead the Prophetess conducting the Heir Apparent in ye Path of Glory'. A grossly fat woman leads by the hand the little Napoleon-Charles, son of Louis (b. 10 Oct. 1802). The child goose-steps arrogantly, holding out a sceptre in his left hand. He is dressed much like his father, but with the addition of a ribbon and star. Mme Talleyrand wears a feathered coronet and an enormous nosegay; she holds a fan on which is a goat. This, and her patched face, indicate her dissolute past. Slightly behind her, and on her right., hobbles 'Talleyrand-Perigord. - Prime Minister & King at Arms bearing the Emperor's Geneology.' He is burlesqued, with a 'cheese-cutter' shin, and a r. foot supported by blocks under the shoe. On his left. shoulder he carries a framed genealogical tree, and hung to his person are crests and symbols in rectangular frames. Napoleon's family tree issues from 'Buone Butcher' and, passing through 'Buone Cuckold', terminates in 'Napoleone Emperor', which is crowned. "A travesty of Peters's 'An Angel carrying the Spirit of a Child to Paradise', exhibited R.A. 1783, in which the angel is a portrait of Isabella, Duchess of Rutland, and the figures have a background of clouds. Mrs. Fitzherbert, as the angel, flies upwards, her right. arm caressingly round a little girl, her left. pointing up to an irradiated and burlesqued altar, surrounded with cherub's heads, which recede in aerial perspective from the lower heads, which are fully characterized, to the upper ones, which are small. These angels are (l.) Windham, Grenville, Grey, Erskine, Grattan, and a (tiny and unrecognizable) Lord Holland. On the r. are Sheridan, Norfolk, Fox, Burdett, and Derby. [These identifications are by Lord Holland. They are self-evident, except Grattan who resembles Carlisle, or Jekyll, and has a profile completely unlike other portraits and caricatures. Wright and Evans give Stanhope for Windham and Carlisle for Grattan. Lord Holland is not characterized, and the identification can rest only on Gillray's statement.] The altar is lit by four large and guttering candles; over it, stiff and grotesque, are a Virgin and Child, 'La Sainte Veirge' [sic]. The head and hands of a demon emerge from a chalice which is flanked by vases of flowers. Three books surround the altar each open at a print: the Pope holding his cross and wearing a tiara; the many-headed Beast of Revelation (cf. BMSat 5534, &c); and a grotesque rendering of the Saint-Esprit, or dove of Pentecost. The rays, which descend towards Mrs. Fitzherbert, are inscribed 'Indulgences', 'Absolutions', 'Luxuries', 'Absolutions', 'Dissipations'. Mrs. Fitzherbert is a stout figure, whose realism is burlesqued by outspread wings and floating draperies. In her hair are three large plumes, emblem of the Prince of Wales; a cross hangs from her neck, a rosary flies outward. A large pouch inscribed 'Play-Things' is attached to her waist: from this hang a lighted censer and a rosary; from it project the head of a saint (burlesqued), a calvary in a bottle, a book: 'Brighton Breviary', a monstrance, St. Andrew holding his cross, a bunch of leaves. Mrs. Fitzherbert registers determined fanaticism; the little girl, childish devotion. They ascend between dark douds. "Hood, in naval uniform, and Sheridan toss Paull high in the air from a Coalition-Blanket. Paull is dressed as a tailor, with ungartered stockings and slippers, a tape-measure round his shoulders; he drops a tailor's goose (iron) and shears. Hood wears naval uniform with top-boots; he tucks a corner of the blanket under his empty coat-sleeve (he lost his arm in an action off Rochefort, 25 Sept. 1805). In Sheridan's pocket is a pamphlet: 'The Devil among ye Tailors'. Below the blanket is a flat tombstone: 'Sacred to the Memory of Poor Charley late Member for the City of Westminster - We ne'er shall meet his like again!!!' This, together with adjacent flag-stones, the ghost of Fox is pushing up; his head and hand emerge, registering profound disapproval; he says: "O Temporal O Mores." Behind Hood is a mob of cheering sailors with banners; two are inscribed: 'Hood and Sheridan - for Ever! - no Skulking to Buonaparte, and Navy and volunteers No Sarver ['] no Taylor." They wear favours inscribed 'Hood' and they shout "Hood & Sherry". Behind Sheridan are cheering volunteers in uniform with a banner: 'Sheridan and Hood! - Volunteers and the Navy.' They shout "Sherry & Hood for Ever"; "No Stitchlouse"; "Sherry" [three times], "Sheridan". Behind (r.) is the left. end of the hustings with placards indicating the polling places for the parishes of 'St James' and 'St George'. Behind the blanket, and in the distance, is a cheering mob; those on the left shout "Hood for Ever" or [once only] "Sherry for ever". Those on the r. "A satire on the approaching election for the Chancellorship of Oxford University. Grenville, dressed as a cardinal, heads a small procession towards the Devil, who wears a robe on which is a large cross, and holds the bland mask with which he has been hiding his face. Grenville, bowing low, and deferentially holding his large hat, holds out a paper: Catholic Petition for the vacant Chancellorship with a Plan for Erecting a New Popish Sanhedrim on the ruins of old Alma-Mater, The Devil says: Well done my Children! This is all the Convocation I would have; in his left hand is a pitchfork. The Marquis of Buckingham, dressed as a Jesuit, stands behind him, one hand on his shoulder, the other holding his barbed tail. Beside him is Canning (unrecognizable) wearing a Jesuit's biretta. Beside the Devil is a greyhound with the head of Grey, its collar inscribed Popish Gray Hound. Immediately behind Grenville walks the Pope, wearing his tiara, and holding his cross; he holds up Grenville's robe on which is a large cross. Napoleon crouches behind the Pope, holding on to his robes and hiding under his mantle. He wears a crown, with uniform and spurred boots; his hand is on the hilt of his sword. Behind walk together Temple, enormously fat and dressed as a monk, and his brother, Lord George Grenville, similarly dressed. The former carries the Host, the latter a lighted candle. In the background rows of bishops and clergymen face the procession. Bishops in the front row, humbly sweeping the ground with their mitres, bow low, each clasping a Mass Book, while those behind cheer with raised mortar-board, hand, or Mass Book. On five of the books are the names of bishoprics: York [Vernon], St Asaph [Cleaver], London [Randolph], Oxford [Moss], Norwich [Bathurst].
