Tom Idle is shown in a churchyard sprawled on a tomb playing hustle-cap with a one-eyed man wearing a striped cap and a ragged boot-black. Abstract:
In an underground drinking den Tom Idle, with a pistol at his foot and another in his pocket, shows his stolen goods to his one-eyed accomplice unaware that behind him his companion (the prostitute) from the garret bedroom (Plate 7) is betraying him to the magistrate and constables. A serving woman with a patch where her nose should be approaches the two thieves with a large tankard in her hands. To their right, the body of a man is being pushed through a trapdoor. In the far right a soldier with his back to the viewer embraces a woman. In the background there is a brawl while two other men sit by the fireside, one of whom is smoking a pipe before a roaring fire, the other asleep under a rope (noose?). The right of the frame is decorated with a scourge, manacles and a hangman's rope; on the left frame hang the mace of the City of London, the alderman's gold chain and a sword of state

Tom Idle sits up in a bed as if in a fright, his hair on end and his hands raised in alarm. He looks bugged-eyed at the door that has been secured by two planks wedging it shut. At his side is a prostitute, her back turned towards him as she calmly examines her booty, an earring dangling in her fingers; its pair, two watches and other objects are spread out on a cloth at her side. The two pistols on the floor show that Tom and his companion have been involved in robbery. The rat that runs over the pistols is pursued by a cat leaping from the chimney. The bed has collapsed at the foot, a broken jug and a pipe on the floor along with the remains of a meal. Abstract:
A sea chest stamped "Tho Idle his Chest" set in a row boat on the Thames tells us that it is Tom Idle who is being rowed out to sea by a waterman smoking pipe. Using his fingers to make horns on his head, Tom also makes a face at the sailor who points to a gallows on the shore (Cuckold's Point), while another sailor shows him a rope. Idle's mother sits before him wiping her weeping eyes. In the background on shore are various ships and a line of windmills. In the lower left corner, Tom's Indenture floats on the waves. Goodchild holds the "Day Book", a purse, and a set of keys. The two gloves on the desk are shown clasping, symbolic of the relationship between the two men. On the left a porter wearing the coat-of-arms of the City of London enters the shop carrying rolls of cloth. The porter has a large carbuncular nose. His dog bares its teeth at the shop cat who hisses back, back arched. In the background workers sit at the looms and spinning wheels; attached to the desk is the "London Almanack".
