"Five members of the Opposition watch with admiring surprise 'Ombres Chinoises': figures whose shadows are thrown on a sheet or screen, the scene enclosed in a circle: three fat Dutchmen seated on the sea advance directly towards the spectators. On the shoulders of each sits a French sansculotte soldier, cadaverous and sinister; the central figure wears a cocked hat from which project cannon or trench-mortars, he holds a tricolour flag. The others wear bonnets-rouges; one (left) blows a trumpet, the other (right) beats a drum. The Dutchmen are impassively smoking pipes, two wear French cockades; from the hips of each project the mouths of cannon. The light background of the circle stands out on a tinted ground; above it is a scroll, apparently issuing from the mouth of the trumpet: 'Terror the Order of the Day'. Only the heads and shoulders of the spectators are visible, all in back view except that of Lansdowne on the extreme right, who says "Astonishing effect". The others (left to right) are Fox, looking through a glass as in British Museum Satires No. 8641, Sheridan, Stanhope, and a bishop identified as Watson of Llandaff. "The artist (left), a partly draped figure with small horns among his loosely curling hair, points with both hands to a picture on an easel (right), turning his head towards the spectator. In front of him (left) is a table on which are his painting-materials: a sheaf of brushes in a pot, palette, charcoal-holder. On a large canvas a man with the head of a wolf stands wearing a sheepskin with the head on his head and shoulders. A satirical print rebuking the many writers who profited by writing memoirs of Samuel Johnson. On the left, Mrs. Piozzi is seated at her writing desk in her study. With a look of astonishment. she looks behind her at the ghost of Samuel Johnson in a night shirt who with his right hand points to the portraits of James Boswell and Sir John Hawkins on the wall and in his left hand holds a money purse. Another portrait on the far right depicts John Courtenay with a pen in his hand looking toward a bust of Prisian. On her desk is a letter "D Johnson ... Letters Dear Lady", implying that she has been concoting Johnson's letters to her. Immediately above her desk in the middle of the wall of books, a violin, an allusion to her second husband a musician, obscures the portrait of her first husband Henry Thrale

"Stanhope stands in his library, declaiming; he has just risen from his chair and holds his pen in his raised right hand, his left rests on a small table (right) covered with documents. He wears a cocked hat; his leanness is caricatured, his legs being of exaggerated thinness. His right foot rests on a large volume, 'Cocker's Arithmetic'. Under his left hand are 'Observations upon Mr Pitts Plan' and 'M . . of Mr Sheridan's Speech - I prefer the Noble Lord['s] Plan to th[at] of the Minister less visionary'. Behind the table is a bookcase against which are pinned two placards, the smaller superimposed on the other. The larger is a 'Table of the Average Price of Stocks for April 1786', the prices being partly hidden by the smaller print: a man rides a horse in the air, above a line of buildings; a flying figure blows a trumpet. It is inscribed 'Ready for Ascension in a few Days Aerial Figures' and 'Thin glittering Textures of the filmy Dew'. On the right is a small cupboard on legs, its open door showing a chamber-pot whose overflowing contents drip on to a document inscribed 'To Prevent Bribery at Elections'. On the pot are papers inscribed 'Sinking Fund' and 'Surplus'; these fragments appear to have been torn from a document inscribed 'Report of the select Committee upon the Ministers Plan for the Reduction of the National Debt. "Burke (three quarter length) as a showman bends over his magic lantern in profile to the right. In the upper part of the design is a draped sheet on which are the objects thrown by the lantern. These are (left to right): [1] an oddly shaped elephant chained to a stake inscribed 'A Benares Flea'. [2] Three mountains piled one upon the other, inscribed respectively, 'Ossa', 'Pelion', 'Olympus'; the whole is 'A Begum Wart'. [3] Four large eyes dripping tears float half-submerged in the water they have produced, inscribed, 'Begums Tears'. [4] A whale spouting is 'An Ouzle'. From the right side of the magic lantern the end of a slide (or slider, cf. British Museum Satires No. 6287) emerges; on it is an oriental seated cross-legged and smoking. Next the lantern (right) are the heads and shoulders of two spectators in back view who are applauding; one says "finely imagined"; the other, "poor Ladies they have cried their Eyes out".
