- In Latin., Script: The main section is copied by various similar hands, in Carolingian script: hand (A) copied ff. 3v and 5r-65v; hand (B) ff. 66r-254v and 256r-259v; hand (C) f. 255r-v. The 15th century replacements for missing parts are copied in Gothica Hybrida Libraria, and the additional texts are copied by various 13th-14th century hands, writing in Gothica Textualis Libraria in various sizes, except art. 2, which is in Gothica Cursiva Antiquior., Decoration: Limited and uneven, ceasing after f. 122r. A few simple initials. A small pen drawing of a young man sitting on a bench, with undecipherable accompanying text, and a dry-point sketch of a standing male figure., and Binding: 20th century brown morocco de luxe over cardboard, by Marguerite Duprez-Lahey (1880-1958); both covers blind-tooled with frames and disk motif, also apparent on the blind-tooled turn-ins; and the spine has four raised bands and gold-tooled inscriptions.

- In Latin., Script: Copied by various scribes writing Praegothica, difficult to distinguish from each other because of the uneven level of execution of their hands., Headings in red, missing from f. 12v onwards. 1-3-line plain initials in red of various shades. On f. 1v very large (c. 25 lines) decorated Romanesque initial "P" in red., Holes and defective corners, many repaired; the lower margins of ff. 63 and 91-92 are repaired by means of a strip of parchment; the lower margin of f. 93 is cut off. The manuscript is heavily trimmed at the top. First and last pages very soiled., and Binding: Nineteenth century, England. De luxe, gold-tooled green morocco over cardboard; each cover framed by rich gold-tooling imitating the decorated initial on f. 1v; turn-ins gold-tooled. Gold-tooled spine with repeated motif in the same style and title: "GREGORII / PASTORALIS / M.S.". Gilt edges.

- In Latin., Script: Part I (ff. 1-80): Written by a single scribe in a well formed late caroline calligraphic minuscule. Part II (ff. 81-114): Written by multiple scribes in small highly abbreviated noting hands, above top line. Part III (ff. 115-121): Written by a single scribe in gothic bookhand, above top line. Plain initials, 3- to 2-line, in red. Guide letters., Part I: Decorative initials, 3- to 2-line, in black, with simple pen designs and small "pearls" on the thin parts of the letters, on irregular grounds of pale yellow wash. Initial strokes and plain line-fillers in pale yellow (initial strokes in red on f. 9r presumably added by the rubricator of ff. 1-8). A series of red dots (also a later addition?) outline the ground of initial on f. 18v. Explicit on f. 80r brushed with yellow wash. Part II: Plain monochrome initials, 3- to 2-line, in red or blue. Spaces for rubrics left unfilled; guide letters., and Binding: Between 1800 and 1810, Italy. Half bound in brown calf with bright pink paper sides and edges spattered bluish green. Two green, gold-tooled labels: "Gregorii. M/ Pastoralis/ Manuscrip" and "Saecul XII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 128, 135, 151, 153, 158, 159, and 197, also from the Cistercian abbey of Hautecombe.
