Abstract:
"A corner of the stage at Drury Lane slants diagonally from left to right, showing part of the orchestra and pit (right) with part of two stage-boxes on the extreme right. The stage manager, Raymond, stands addressing the clamorous audience, while on the left a young man with ass's ears sits on a donkey which flourishes its heels so that they strike the lowered stage-curtain. The donkey brays "Ih ho Ih ho Ih ho," its hind-quarter is branded 'My Pegasus Buz'. Its rider recites: "Nor ever here your smiles would be represt, "Knew you the rival flames that fires our breast, "Flame, Fire and Flame!--sad--woe Neddy! Ladies and Gentlemen, My Papa's Pegasus is so full of fire and spirit that very few are capable of mounting him. for my self I never spoke but once & that was-- Unce logos but if you will give me leave to get on with my Papas Monologue I am positive you will pronounce it the prettiest piece of poetry produced for the purpose." Raymond says: "Ladies and Gentlemen, it was never the intention of the Proprietors to introduce Assess [sic] on these boards but as you seem entertained with their braying if it [is] your wish, we will procure some trainers from the other House as we are really ignorant in the management of thes [sic] Animals." Greeted by derisive cheers from the audience, Dr. Busby, also with ass's ears, leans from the upper stage-box, saying, "Ladies and Gentlemen, only hear My Son speak my Monologue written by myself the only one fit to be heard the committee are as ignorant of good Poetry a[s] I am of true criticism. I am a great writer reviews my sons works very clever indeed--writes my own life--well worth reading--my Life of Lucius Otrigger will astonish you now pray hear my Son speak my Monologue!--." A man behind him shouts: "Bravo! Go on! Go, on," and one in the crowded lower box applauds: "Bravo Apollo go on Go . . ." In the foreground a man in the pit shouts pointing to the ass: "Why don't you come down and get up behind don't you see he wants ballast." Six others address the son: "When you have done there--set those Epigrams to Music young Apollo!"; "Off Off Off Off"; "he will be off presently if Neddy kicks so!"; "Go on Go on"; "Speak out you should have brought your Voice with you"; "hear him hear him." The orchestra is empty of performers, but the music scores are headed 'The Judgement of Midas' [O'Keefe's play]. Three large papers lie on the stage inscribed respectively: [1] 'A Lord [Byron] and a Doctor once started for Fame Which for the best Poet should pass The Lord was cried up on account of his name The Doctor cried down for an Ass--' [2] 'Doctor Buz he assures us on Drury new Stage No Horses or Elephants, there should engage But pray Doctor Buz, how comes it to pass, That you your own self should produce there an Ass' [3] 'Old Buz against Quadrupeds, war did wage, And swore on Drury's board's such Mum'ry ne'er should pass But forcing his own Pegasus on Drurys stage The Critic Audience christen'd Buz an Ass.' Behind Raymond is the lower part of the verd-antique pillar which flanked the curtain, and on the right the large ornate lamp, of quasi-Egyptian design in which three hawk-headed monsters support an inverted tripod, the base of a ring of lamp-jets."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:
"A counterblast to British Museum Satires No. 14110, and an imitation of its manner, in the guise of a companion plate. As in that plate, a zebra with a man's head stands in an oval bandbox, but in profile to the right. The head is (presumably) Lord Conyngham; the creature is grey, scraggy rather than plump as before, and with much longer (ass's) ears. On it sits Lord Francis Conyngham; in place of the Queen's bandbox is a larger box, torn to show that it contains fur, and inscribed 'Lady Eliza[beth's] Muff Box'; this covers the rider from chest to thigh. In his right hand is a rolled document: 'Bishop [of Londo]n's golden rule Kings can do no wrong' [see British Museum Satires No. 14133]. The zebra's neck is encircled by necklaces of jewels; in place of the sieve in British Museum Satires No. 14110, a hand (the King's) from the right margin holds out a plate of jewels close to its voracious mouth. The lid of the bandbox in which it stands is inscribed 'Hertford [lightly scored through] Cunningham' [see British Museum Satires No. 13847]. The box, which is patterned with roses, is full of papers: 'Essays by exalted writers bought by the Pall Mall Booksell[er]'; 'Croker Poetical Slanders'; 'Malicious Anecdotes for John Bull', and a newspaper headed 'John Bull Sunday Mag . . .' "Bonaparte (left) and Cornwallis play chess. Bonaparte, not caricatured, alert and military, wearing his large plumed cocked hat, leans forward, pointing to his move; his left arm lies on the table and in his left hand is his sheathed sabre. He says: "Check to your King, remember it is not the first time, and I think a very few Manoeuvres more will completely convince you that I am better acquainted with the Game I am playing than you are aware of." Cornwallis, plump and civilian despite his regimentals and profession, sits without a hat, scratching his head apprehensively. He says: "Curse it I shall lose this Game; You are too much for me." He wears his ribbon and star, 'Honi soit' on his garter. The chairs are symbolical: that of Bonaparte has ormolu laurel wreaths, the legs are formed of fasces and axes; that of Cornwallis, with plain oval back, suggests an English drawing-room."--British Museum online catalogue

"From slits in a huge green bag, labelled 'Evidence against the Q...n', peer the heads of five witnesses against the Queen. Round it stand puzzled and apprehensive Ministers discussing their plans. Castlereagh, on the extreme left, faces Sidmouth who stands with flexed knees holding a constable's staff, one hand on the bag. He says: "Well Gentlemen! we are pretty well in for it now--we must lie through thick and thin to do any good, and get as many as we can to do the same, or it is all up with us; what say you Doctor have you any specific for the occasion." Sidmouth: "Friend Derry I could as soon produce the Philosophers stone or Elixir of Life but if your brazen face can't bring us through it is a forlorn hope, however here is some chance in the Bag!" The head of a man crouching in the Bag looks up to say: "Yes I have some choice Tales to communicate what with Bargemen--Chambermaids--W....s and Rogues, whom I have had the honor to associate with. I shall be able to COOK up a high seasoned dish that his M.....y will relish." On the right of the Bag stands Canning, scratching his head with a puzzled expression; he says: "Curse that City Hop Merchant [Wood] he has thrown bitter into this Brewing with a vengeance! I'll try what a dash of my wit will do, or we shall be obliged to swallow it ourselves!" A pretty female head looks up at him from the Bag, to say: "I say Mr. Flashman! don't stand scratching your head in that manner but hear what I have to tell you when a woman is determined on revenge she will stick at nothing to accomplish it--turn me away indeed for a little amusement with Peter, when my husband was out I hate such scrupulous Modesty. I'll swear any thing you wish." Three faces appear at smaller slits, saying respectively: "I'll swear!"; "So will I!"; "So will I to any lie." Eldon (right) in Chancellor's wig and gown, walks off to the right, holding a rolled document: 'Rex [vers]us Regina'. He says with a meditative frown: "Well Gentlemen I shall go home and consult about it. I dont like to decide too hastily Look before you leap ought to be the Motto of my Seal" [cf. British Museum Satires No. 15139, &c.]. "A halt for refreshment in the Egyptian desert. The Princess sits on Bergami's knee, her arm round his shoulder, while he caresses her lasciviously. They sit with their back to an ass which brays: "Oh Tempora!!" She is very décolletée and wears trousers, and a feathered cap. A large miniature of Bergami, see British Museum Satires No. 13858, dangles from her neck. Beside them on the ground is a basket of bottles, and overturned spirit-bottle and glass. A small boy, Willy Austin, stands staring at the pair, and blowing soap-bubbles. On the left, but disregarded, is Mahomet (see British Museum Satires No. 14119) performing a dance with flexed knees; he holds up a crescent and a piece of drapery, looking towards the pair to say: "in his signis Vincetes!!," parodying the words of Constantine's vision of the Cross. "A farmyard scene, with a corner of the house on the left. A grossly fat and carbuncled parson on a quest for tithes encounters the farmer's wife, who runs towards him proffering an open bandbox, with a dangling lid inscribed 10th. A miniature hussar, very dandified in shako and pelisse, stands in it, superciliously inspecting the parson through an eye-glass. The woman, who is plump and well-dressed, wearing apron and bonnet, says: Seeing your Reverence comeing for your Tithes, I have brought you a Tenth. The parson, who holds a large book, Tithe list, and has a chicken in his capacious pocket, answers with a scowl and gesture of refusal: Take it back! take it back! good Woman; I never tithe Monkeys. The little hussar says: Eh! eh! what does that there fellow say? An amused yokel with a pitchfork leans over a gate (left). A cock crows on a dunghill, an ass brays. "George IV, crowned, and with orb and sceptre, sits on a coronation chair in Westminster Abbey (right). The Archbishop, well characterized, stands beside him, holding his mitre, his right hand on the chair. On the King's right hand stands Londonderry (Castlereagh) in Garter robes; other peers stand behind him. All watch the antics of Canning, dressed in parti-coloured clothes as a merry-andrew or buffoon. He kneels on the dais at the King's feet, arms flung wide; at his feet is a high-crowned hat with a peacock's feather; on the back of his tunic are the letters M P and P C. He declaims: The delight of the Nation at the Celebration of your Majesty's Coronation, the Exultation throughout the Creation exceeds all Imagination. the Expectation to which the Anticipation of this Consumation has given occasion is beyond Contemplation; we offer the Oblation of our Congratulation, without Hesitation or Trepidation; no Tribulation can effect a Cessation of the Sensation which pervades every Station; no Situation in whatever Deprivation will utter an Execration for the Association are in Preparation to effect an Extirpation of all Defamation. We hope the Expectation of a Decollation will produce Annihilation of all Deviation from strict Regulation; we submit to Subjugation without Hesitation, and we offer our Oration with gratefull Adoration upon this Jollification. The King composedly touches (or kicks) Canning's chin with his toe. Peeresses stand in a gallery across the north transept, holding their coronets.
