- Description:
- Carleton E. Watkins was a San Francisco photographer who worked both with official surveys and independently to photograph California, Nevada and Utah. In 1867 he served with Clarence King as the official photographer to the California Geological Survey, and in 1870 was the official photographer for King's Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel., Manuscript or letterpress captions on mounts, some with numbers. Additional titles supplied, when necessary, in brackets on mount versos., and Accompanied by a box list.

- Photographs by chiefly unidentified photographers that document the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco, California, 1938-1940. Images include views of Brazil Building, Court of Pacifica, Court of Reflections, Japan Pavilion, Mission Trails Building, Pacific House, Peru Building, Rainbow Fountain in the Court of Flowers, San Francisco Building, Temple Compound, Tower of the Sun, and Triumphal Arch. A few snapshots document activities at the fair by an unidentified tourist, August 26-September 1, 1940. The collection also includes copy photographs of preparatory drawings and models for some of the exhibition buildings. Photographers identified in the collection include images of the Westinghouse Exhibit by Gabriel Moulin and a view of the Tower of the Sun by Fred Meyer and Identified portraits include Zoe Dell Lantis, a mascot for the exhibition, as well as her colleagues, including Doris Hillers, Aileen Poole, and Tanya Widrin. There is also a view of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his entourage riding in an automobile and passing Golden Gate International Exposition construction workers in July 1938

- Taber photographs mounted on pages of advertisements for San Francisco businesses. Most of the photographs depict the outside of the business building (including a view of Taber's studio). There are also four portraits: Taber, John P. Jackson (President of the Post Publishing Company), A. Andrews (jeweller), and Emelie Melville. Three proprietors pose with their products or coworkers: Robert Samisch with his porcelain decorations, Mrs. W. P. Rutherford with her custom made corsets, and Robert F. Bunker with his butchers; in addition, there are two interior views: Bunker's pork packing counter, and Louis Dampf & Co.'s frame shop. There are also photographs of several illustrated lithographs for a winery and two breweries, a view of the bridge over Russian River at Healdsburg constructed by the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad, and part of an exhibit of Pacific Saw Manufacturing Co. at the Fourteenth Industrial Exhibition
