Men, horses, and (mongrel) dogs in wild but spirited confusion in a forest glade pursue a cow (left); the stag is in the background running in the opposite direction, followed by one man on foot. One horse and rider struggle in a ditch while a second horse, which has kicked off its rider, leaps on top of them. A bald John Gilpin clasps his mount round the neck.
