"Fox, dressed as a Tudor monarch, starts from a low couch on which he has been lying, his eyes staring in horror. In his right hand he grasps a sword inscribed 'Injustice'. Round his neck, on a ribbon inscribed 'Order of Blacklegs', is a medallion bearing a dice-box and dice. At his feet is a helmet (right) with a closed visor inscribed 'Helmet of Unrighteousness', and various documents inscribed respectively 'Petn Kirkwa[ll]' ; 'Westminster Election'; 'Private list 2500 bad votes on my side of the Question'; 'Ways and means P-- W-- [Prince of Wales] Newmar[ket] Brooks's--Dutchess--North--D-- de Chart[res] &c. &c. &c. &c'; 'India Bill For the better security Of power to me and my Friends'. Fox wears a ruff, slashed doublet and trunk-hose, an ermine-bordered cloak, and slashed shoes. A curtain hangs on each side of the couch; it partly conceals (left) a framed portrait-head of the Duchess of Devonshire in profile to the right, wearing at her breast a 'Fox' favour. Above the design is etched: 'If we be conquerd, Let men conquer us, And not these Bastard Britons, whom my Father Has in their own Land, Cheaten, spurn d and trod 'on And left them on record an Heir of Shame. "In the foreground are Wellington and Peel as grave-diggers; Eldon, a stout elderly Hamlet wearing a cloak, stands (left) holding a skull, and saying: "Here's fine revolution and [sic] we had the trick to see it." Wellington stands in a grave, in profile to the left, wielding a pickaxe. His shirt-sleeves are rolled up, he wears a small cap; his military coat, cocked hat, and sword lie beside him. He says to Peel: 'Come take off the Orange Peel [see British Museum Satires No. 15683] quickly, I can't get on without you.' Peel, wearing garments of green slashed with orange, is about to take off an orange waistcoat (cf. British Museum Satires No. 15701). He answers 'I'll change my self before you can say Jack Robinson.' On the extreme right are the posterior and left leg of George IV (as in British Museum Satires No. 12803) who is scurrying off to the right, beside a tombstone which serves as sign-post and is inscribed 'To Hanover' [see British Museum Satires No. 15704]. In the middle distance (right) is the funeral procession, the coffin carried by four bearers with a pall inscribed 'Constitution 1829'. On it stand a large crown and mitre with papers: 'Magna Charta' and 'Bill of Rights'. It is followed by one mourner in cloak and scarf (J. B.), who covers his face with a despairing gesture, exclaiming 'Oh! dear! Oh! dear, what will become of Mrs Bull, & all my little Bulls?-- We shall have nothing but the Popes Bulls. Oh my--' Behind are (left) St. Paul's and (right) York Minster. The pediment of the former is inscribed 'St Pauls now St Patricks' [cf. British Museum Satires No. 11898]. On the steps, about to enter, is the Pope, rollicking indecently between a monk (left) and O'Connell (right) in wig and gown. The Pope: 'Och! my darling you have done the job. fal lal la!!' O'Connell: 'Huzza! Huzza! Ould Ireland for ever! Huzza!!!' Behind them (left) capers a ragged Irishman, playing bagpipes and shouting 'St Patrick day in the morning!! Och! my Darlings!' An Irish crowd is indicated in the background. Farther from the spectator is York Minster, blazing furiously, flames and smoke covering the sky; an incendiary with a firebrand (Martin, see British Museum Satires No. 15658) rushes from the building, striding across a paper inscribed 'Blanco [scored through] Black is White'."--British Museum online catalogue

"Scene in the House of Lords at the Queen's 'trial', showing the throne against the end wall, with the two (temporary) galleries. The Queen exclaims in terror, both arms raised, at the sight of the first witness against her, Majocchi, and of the ghost of Princess Charlotte, who stands, draped in white, beside him, holding her infant, with an arm extended towards the Queen. The latter shrieks: "Theodore!! my Daughter too! ah! what have I done!!! Oh speak." The ghost, garbling Hamlet's words (III. iv, ll. 40-5; 92-4): "Such an Act good Mother, as blurs the / "Grace and Blush of Modesty, calls Virtue Hippocrite / "makes marriage vows as false as Dicers Oaths--Oh / "such a deed! to live in the rank sweat of an / ensemen'd bed stived [sic] in Corruption." Majocchi says: "Non mi Ricardo" [sic]. Beside the Queen, and on the extreme right, are Brougham and Denman, her counsel; they hold documents inscribed 'Defence of the Queen' and 'Queens Defence'. Both register astonished horror: Brougham exclaims (misquoting 'Hamlet', I. ii): "All is not well--I doubt / "some foul play!--for foul / "deeds, will rise--." Denman: "'Tis very strange!" ['Hamlet', I. ii]. The prosecuting counsel (left) are equally disturbed: Gifford, grasping the 'Bill of Pains [and P]enalties', exclaims, misquoting Horatio ['Hamlet', I. i]: "Behold it starteth like / "a guilty thing upon a shamefull "Summons." Copley: "Angels and Ministers / "of Grace defend us" ['Hamlet', I. iv]. A seated judge turns to them, pointing to the Queen, saying: "Look to the Queen!!" ['Hamlet', v. ii]. There is a background of peers, freely indicated, all startled, while spectators watch from the galleries. In the centre foreground a large green bag (see British Museum Satires No. 13735) stands on the floor, from which clouds of smoke emerge; it has a strap (unbuckled) in the form of a huge Garter, inscribed 'Ho[ni]... Pense'. On the bag is a garbled version of Macbeth's words (I. ii): "Will all great Neptune's Ocean wash this Blood clean from this Bag?
