Abstract:
Photographs created by E. J. Bellocq chiefly of nude prostitutes in Storyville, New Orleans, Louisiana, circa 1910-1915, and printed from his negatives by an unidentified printer, probably in 1950. E. J. Bellocq (1873-1949), born John Ernest Joseph Bellocq, was a commercial photographer who worked in New Orleans, Louisiana, circa 1902-circa 1940. Bellocq is best known for his photographs of prostitutes working in Storyville, the legalized red light district of New Orleans. and Print No. 2 depicts a nude woman wearing a sleeping cap and reclining upon a sheet with geometric patterns on an upholstered wooden chaise lounge.

Linen mat tape affixed to verso of each print with a pencil number inscription, 1-7, probably inscribed by Abraham Stransky. and Pencil inscriptions on the verso of each print in an unidentified hand, probably transcribed from original mats: "Ernest J. Bellocq (?-1938) Storyville, photog. New Orleans, La."; "Test print obtained by me (A. S.) in 1950, from owner of the glass negatives at that time"; "Photo: circa: 1912"; "See: 'E. J. Bellocq,' Pub. by Museum of Modem Art - 1970 & Rose, Al: 'Storyville, New Orleans' - 1974"; and "Bellocq made photos: 1895-1930s."

E. J. Bellocq (1873-1949), born John Ernest Joseph Bellocq, was a commercial photographer who worked in New Orleans, Louisiana, circa 1902-circa 1940. Bellocq is best known for his photographs of prostitutes working in Storyville, the legalized red light district of New Orleans. and Print No. 6 is a variant depiction of the same woman and setting from print no. 2. The woman has shifted her pose slightly.

"Missions des Peres Oblats en Amerique du Nord." "Camp indien autour de la Mission." Numerous hide tents are pitched before a wooden church building. Several canoes have been left beside one of the tents. On the back of the postcard is printed "Edit. des Oblats de Marie, 71, Rue St-Guidon, Bruxelles." and Also included in the International Mission Photography Archive.
"An indian nun and orphanage (Pondicherry [Puducherry])." The children sit in four rows, while the nun sits behind them. Most have shirts, but some do not. This postcard was printed in Paris, France.
"Inde. - Baptême in extremis d'un vieux brahme." An elderly Brahmin man is being baptized by a nun. He is laying down and covered with a blanket. She is kneeling over him. This postcard was printed in Paris, France.

An indigenous Catholic sister instructs catechists on the lawn using an easel and a book of pictures. Women and children sit around her., and The back of the postcard is closely covered with handwriting.

A white-clad nun sits and tends to the heel of a young woman standing beside her. A brick building is visible in the background., and The back of the postcard has no handwriting.
"Celui qui reçoit un de ces petits en mon nom, me reçoit moi-même (Math. XVIII)." A nun is pictured with two mothers and their children. Their children are in baskets. They are all outside. Additional writing on the card asks for monetary donations to help with the baptisms of infants.
