Caldwell was a missionary serving under the American Presbyterian Mission, South in Taichow, Jiangsu province, who took a trip through Gansu province in 1926., and Mt. Pass and toll gate (Kansu Prov.) Narrow road taken through mountains.
"Back carriers for mountain roads." One man is shown with his back pack full of supplies. The basket pack is attached to a pole at the bottom which supports the weight when the carrier stops to rest.

Also included in the International Mission Photography Archive. and View of mountains South of Campus People on foot and on donkeys are walking a path towards hills and mountains south of the Shantung Christian University campus. The land around them is scrubby, but has some patches of trees and other vegetation.
“En dhoolie (dans les montagnes). In draagberrie (in ‘t gebergte).” A missionary sister is shown leaving the mission in a covered stretcher carried by four porters. The caption and following information are printed on the back of the postcard: “Les Ursulines de l’Institut de Thildonck dans la Mission du Bengale, Indes. De Ursulinen van Thildonck in de Missie van Bengalen, Indië. Ern. Thill, Bruxelles.” There are several handwritten words in French on the back.

The Smiths were a family of missionaries serving under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in China, 1901-1950, primarily in Ing Tai and Foochow [Fuzhou].
